Chapter 10 - Flashing Blue Lights

The brilliant flash of azure light cut through the dark library windows, casting long, frantic shadows across the mahogany bookcases. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second before abruptly cutting off as vehicles crunched onto the gravel driveway outside.

Sarah let out a sharp gasp of relief, her hands trembling as she clutched Leo tighter. "Thank god. Someone from the village must have heard the noise or called it in."

Jonathan’s face darkened instantly. He exchanged a sharp, unspoken glance with his two guards, who immediately braced themselves, their hands hovering near their suit jackets.

"You called the police?" Jonathan demanded, spinning around to face Mark, his cultured facade completely slipping away to reveal a desperate edge.

"I didn't have to," Mark replied, his voice firm, though his heart hammered wildly against his ribs. "In a small town, a dozen strange luxury cars rolling up to a historic estate tends to draw attention. The neighbors talk."

"You fool," Jonathan hissed, taking a threatening step forward. "You have no idea what you've just invited into your lives. Those aren't local cops out there. Your father's influence reaches deeper than you can possibly imagine."

Before Mark could process the warning, heavy footsteps pounded up the front porch stairs, followed by three sharp, authoritative raps on the heavy oak front door.

"Police! Open up!" a deep voice bellowed from the foyer.

Arthur slowly lifted his head, a strange, weary smile touching the corners of his bruised lips. "Let them in, Mark," the old man whispered softly. "It's over. Let it all come out."

Mark hesitated, his eyes darting between the menacing strangers and the open hidden door where the captive still sat tied to his chair. With a deep breath to steady his frayed nerves, Mark strode out of the library and down the short hallway to the front entrance. He threw the heavy oak door open, expecting to see the local sheriff or county troopers.

Instead, standing on the porch under the flashing red and blue lights were two men in dark tactical gear, their faces hidden behind black balaclavas, holding automatic rifles pointed squarely at Mark's chest.

"Hands on your head! Do it now!" the lead tactical officer barked, his voice altered and metallic through his communication gear.

Mark froze, his arms flying up in instinctive surrender. "Wait! I called for help! There's a hostage inside—"

"Quiet!" the officer interrupted harshly, grabbing Mark by the collar and shoving him backward into the foyer, kicking the front door wide open as a dozen more armed operatives flooded the historic manor.

Behind them, stepping out of an unmarked black SUV parked on the gravel, was a middle-aged woman in a crisp trench coat. She removed her sunglasses, revealing cold, piercing blue eyes that scanned the chaotic scene with chilling familiarity.

"Secure the perimeter," the woman commanded smoothly, walking past the armed guards into the house. She locked her gaze directly onto Arthur as he hobbled out of the library. "Hello, Thomas. It's been a long time."
