Chapter 2 - The Bound Man

The darkness inside the hidden alcove seemed to swallow the meager light spilling from the library, but as Mark forced his eyes to adjust, the horrifying silhouette emerged. Tied securely to an old wooden chair in the center of the room was an elderly man. His white hair was matted with sweat and dirt, and his frail body slumped heavily to one side against thick ropes that bit deep into his gray jacket. A dark bandana was knotted tightly across his lower face, serving as a cruel, suffocating gag that muffled every desperate sound he tried to make.

"Oh my god," Mark whispered, his voice catching in his throat as the full weight of the discovery crashed down upon him. He took a hesitant step across the threshold, his sensible loafers clicking sharply against the forgotten floor.

"Mark, don't go in there! It could be a trap!" Sarah cried out, grabbing the sleeve of his light button-down shirt. Her fingers dug into his fabric, her nails cold through the cotton. "We need to call the police right now. Grab your phone."

"I can't just leave him here," Mark replied, his voice dangerously low as he shrugged off her grip. "Look at him. He's barely breathing. Sarah, he's alive."

Arthur pushed past them both, ignoring his cane as he rushed into the gloom. The old man smelled the stagnant air and winced, coughing slightly as he neared the captive.

"My god," Arthur repeated, his voice barely a rasp. "I know that face. No, it can't be."

The captive man in the chair jerked violently at the sound of Arthur’s voice. His milky, bloodshot eyes widened with a frantic, desperate recognition. He began to thrash against the thick hemp ropes binding his wrists and torso, the old chair groaning in protest against the wooden floorboards. Muffled cries of absolute anguish erupted from behind the black bandana, a desperate symphony of terror that tore at everyone's sanity.

"Easy, friend, take it easy," Mark murmured, rushing forward to help untie the tight knots biting into the old man's wrists. His fingers fumbled clumsily against the coarse fibers, panic making his hands shake uncontrollably. "We're going to get you out. Just breathe."

Sarah stood in the doorway, her arms wrapped tightly around her chest as she watched the grim tableau unfold. Leo peeked from behind her skirt, his young face pale and streaked with sudden tears of guilt.

As Mark finally loosened the top knot around the captive’s left wrist, the old man suddenly stopped thrashing. His body went entirely rigid. His wide, terrified eyes locked onto Arthur with a look of pure, unadulterated warning. With a trembling, freed hand, the captive weakly raised a single, bruised finger, pointing directly at Arthur’s chest.
