Chapter 9 - The Clearing in the Woods

Daniel raised his arm, shielding Elena and Lucas behind him as he scanned the dense wall of grey trees. The mist swirled around their ankles, thick and white, glowing faintly under the light of the crimson moon. The skeletal branches overhead creaked in a wind that they couldn't feel on their skin, creating an eerie, discordant rhythm.
"Who's there?" Daniel called out, his voice sounding hollow and swallowed up by the dense fog.
A figure stepped out from behind a massive, moss-draped oak. It was an old woman wearing a heavy wool shawl identical to the one draped over the rocking chair in the vault. Her back was turned to them, her grey hair tied back in a neat bun. She stood motionless beside a deep, circular pit dug into the forest floor, the bottom of which glowed with that same sickly red light.
"You took your time getting here, Daniel," the old woman said without turning around. Her voice was clear, sharp, and unmistakably alive—the voice of Grandmother Elena, who had supposedly died three years ago.
Elena gasped, clutching her chest. "Grandma? That's... that's impossible. We buried you!"
The old woman turned her head slowly over her shoulder. Her face was smooth, unlined, and terrifyingly young—the face of a twenty-year-old woman, though her eyes held the ancient, weary intelligence of a century. She smiled, revealing teeth that were entirely too sharp and white.
"You buried a box of rocks, Elena," the grandmother said smoothly, taking a slow step toward them. "Just like your parents did before you. Just like Daniel's father will do when his time comes."
"What are you talking about?" Daniel demanded, stepping forward despite the primal warning bells screaming in his head. "What did you do to our house? Where is our home?"
"Your home is just a shell, Daniel. A monument built over a debt," the woman replied, gesturing toward the glowing pit behind her. "Every generation, a sacrifice must be made to keep the foundations strong. The blood of the firstborn seals the pact. That is why you were drawn back here. That is why the vault opened."
Lucas suddenly broke away from Elena’s grip. He didn't run in panic; he walked with a calm, measured stride directly toward the edge of the pit, looking down into the reddish glow with a beatific smile.
"Lucas!" Elena screamed, lunging forward.

Before she could take two steps, an invisible barrier slammed down between them with a sharp thump, throwing Elena backward onto the cold ground.
