Chapter 5 - Whispers Through the Steel

The scratching sound stopped abruptly, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic thud of a boot heel hitting the hallway floor just outside the vault. Thud. Thud. Thud.

Daniel stepped in front of Elena and Lucas, planting his feet firmly on the concrete floor, his fists clenched at his sides. "Who's out there?" he called out, his voice echoing off the curved ceiling. "Identify yourself!"

Silence answered him, save for the faint, tinny notes of the music box, which was still playing its backward lullaby from the corner where it had fallen. The battery-powered flashlight flickered twice, casting long, writhing shadows that seemed to dance along the concrete seams before dying out completely, plunging them into absolute, pitch-black obscurity.

"Daniel, give me your hand," Elena whispered from the floor, her voice trembling so hard her teeth chattered. He reached out blindly through the dark until his fingers brushed her cold, damp skin. She gripped his hand with bone-crushing force.

"I'm here," Daniel murmured, straining his eyes to pierce the gloom, though he could see nothing at all. "We're going to get out of here. There has to be a secondary exit, a maintenance shaft. Houses built in the seventies always had utility tunnels."

"You didn't see the blueprints when we bought the place, did you?" Elena’s voice was hollow, filled with a sudden, devastating realization. "You never looked at the original architectural plans."

Daniel hesitated. "What are you talking about?"

"It wasn't built in the seventies, Daniel," Elena said, her breath hitching as she spoke into the dark. "My father helped build this foundation when I was five years old. He told me the house was built around the vault, not the other way around. The vault was already here, buried deep beneath the hillside, decades before a single brick of this neighborhood was laid."

Before Daniel could process the horrifying implication of her words, a sharp, clear voice spoke from directly beside them in the darkness—not from the hallway, but from the empty corner of the vault room itself.

"You should never have brought the boy back," an elderly woman's voice rasped, cold and ancient.

Lucas gasped, his small hand slipping from Elena's grip as something brushed past his shoulder in the pitch black.
