Chapter 1 - The Weight of Steel

The hallway of the suburban house felt suddenly airless, choked by the scent of old dust and cooling concrete. Elena gripped the edge of the hallway table, her knuckles whitening. Her dark hair fell across her face in damp strands, catching the harsh overhead light. She stared directly at Daniel, her eyes wide with a frantic, desperate intensity. Her hoop earrings caught a faint glint of light as she shook her head, the motion rigid and sharp.
"No toques esa rueda, Daniel," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with an urgent terror that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards.
Daniel stood motionless, his short dark hair neat, his dark polo shirt stretched across broad shoulders. His jaw was set in a firm, unyielding line. He looked at the heavy vault door looming at the end of the narrow corridor. The metal wheel handle gleamed coldly in the dimness, an absurd, industrial monstrosity built into the foundation of a normal family home.
Behind them, eight-year-old Lucas clutched the hem of Elena’s light beige button-up shirt. The boy’s yellow and blue t-shirt looked too bright for the suffocating gloom of the hallway. Lucas raised a trembling hand, pointing a shaky finger directly at the massive steel door.
"La abuela está ahí adentro," Lucas whimpered, his voice small and cracking with raw fear.
Elena whirled around, grabbing Daniel’s arm. "Don't listen to him, Daniel. She isn't there. She can't be. You know what happened three years ago. You know what they said!"
Daniel pulled his arm away slowly, his expression hardening into stone. He took a heavy step forward, ignoring the panic bleeding through Elena’s voice. "Lucas saw something, Elena. Or he thinks he did. But we need to know the truth. Too many lies have been buried in this house."
Elena stared at him in utter shock, her breath hitching in her throat. She could not comprehend how he could look at that door with anything other than absolute dread.
Daniel placed his hand firmly on the freezing metal wheel handle, turning his head to look back at her with a resolute, unbending gaze.
"Hazte para atrás. Voy a abrirla," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a low, commanding register.

Elena’s face froze in extreme close-up, her eyes wide with unmitigated terror, her mouth slightly open in silent horror. The heavy metal gears inside the vault gave a sudden, deafening mechanical groan, turning by themselves from within.
