Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Concrete

The flashlight beam flickered violently as Daniel crossed the threshold into the damp chill of the vault. The air tasted of copper and dry earth, stinging the back of his throat. He held the light steady, sweeping it across the cramped concrete enclosure. The rocking chair sat dead center, but the shadow in the far corner had vanished, leaving only a faint scuff mark on the fresh grey paint of the floor.
"Daniel, get out of there!" Elena screamed from the hallway, her voice sharp with panic. She scrambled to her feet, grabbing Lucas by the shoulders and pulling him further back toward the living room archway. "Come back right now!"
Daniel didn't answer. He stared down at the scuff mark. It was fresh. The dust around it had been disturbed within the last hour, maybe the last few minutes. That meant someone—or something—had been down here before the heavy steel door was unlatched. But the vault hadn't been opened since they bought the house; the combination lock had been rusted shut, and the exterior keypad had lacked batteries for a decade.
He bent down, shining the light lower. Resting against the base of the concrete wall was a small, tarnished silver music box. It was the exact music box Grandmother Elena used to wind up every evening before bed, playing a melancholic lullaby that had driven Daniel to distraction when he was a boy.
Slowly, deliberately, Daniel reached out and picked it up. The metal was ice cold against his warm palm. As his fingers brushed the brass latch, the lid clicked open on its own accord, and the tinny, slow-motion notes of the lullaby began to play in the dead silence of the vault.
Clink. Clink. Clank.
Daniel froze. The tune was playing backward.
"Daniel!" Elena’s footsteps echoed sharply as she rushed to the doorway, grabbing the doorframe to steady herself. Her eyes locked onto the music box in his hand, and all the color drained from her face. "Put that down. Drop it!"

Before Daniel could respond, the heavy vault door behind him swung inward with terrifying speed, slamming shut with a deafening crash that locked them all in total, suffocating darkness.
