Chapter 2 - The Echoes of Yesterday

The sound of grinding steel echoed down the narrow hallway, vibrating through the soles of their shoes. Elena stumbled backward, colliding with the peeling wallpaper of the corridor. Her hands flew to cover her mouth, muffling a sharp intake of breath. She watched in sheer disbelief as the massive locking pins inside the vault door slowly retracted one by one, accompanied by a heavy pneumatic hiss that smelled faintly of ozone and old dust.

Daniel stood his ground, his fingers still wrapped around the freezing metal wheel. His determination hadn't wavered, but a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossed his eyes as the thick door began to swing outward on its heavily greased hinges. It defied every law of physics and memory. Grandmother Elena had passed away in her sleep during the bitter winter of their first year in this house. Her funeral had been attended by dozens; her casket had been lowered into the frozen earth three towns over.

Lucas buried his face against Elena’s hip, whimpering softly. "It’s too cold, Mama. Make it stop."

"Daniel, stop this right now," Elena pleaded, her voice cracking into a ragged whisper. "We seal it back up. Whatever is in there, it’s a trap. A sick joke."

Daniel ignored her. He gripped the edge of the heavy door and pulled it outward with a grunt. The darkness inside the vault was absolute, swallowing the hallway light like a physical substance. No beam of the overhead bulb penetrated more than a few inches into the rectangular void.

"Step back, Elena," Daniel repeated, reaching for the flashlight on the nearby console table. He clicked it on, casting a harsh, trembling beam into the subterranean chamber.

The light cut through swirling motes of dust to reveal concrete walls reinforced with iron beams. But it was not empty. Sitting in the center of the small room was a wooden rocking chair, identical to the one that had supposedly been burned in the backyard incinerator years ago. And draped neatly over the back of the chair was a familiar hand-knitted woolen shawl.

Elena gasped, her legs giving out entirely as she slid down the wall to the floor. "That's impossible."

Daniel took a slow step across the threshold, his flashlight beam sweeping toward the far corner where a shadow shifted violently.
