Chapter 7 - The Red Descent

Elena’s fingers curled around Lucas’s ankle just as the boy took his second step toward the glowing archway. She hauled him backward onto the concrete floor, pulling him into her arms while shielding him with her body. Lucas let out a sharp, angry wail, kicking his legs and thrashing against her grip with a strength that didn't belong to an eight-year-old child.

"Let me go! Grandma is calling me! She has my yellow truck!" Lucas screamed, his face distorted with a terrifying, unnatural rage.

Daniel stared at the opening in the wall, his chest heaving. The reddish glow casting long, distorted shadows up the stone steps wasn't firelight; it looked like the sickly, pulsating light of industrial heat lamps or something far more organic and deeply wrong. A wave of hot air rolled up from the depths, carrying the metallic tang of rust and old iron.

"Elena, hold him tight," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, resolute calm. He picked up the heavy flashlight from the floor, using it as a club in his right hand. "We need to see where this goes. The front door isn't opening. The hallway is sealed. This is our only way out."

"Out?" Elena laughed hysterically, her eyes wild as she pinned Lucas to the floor with her weight. "That’s not an exit, Daniel! That’s a descent! Look at the walls!"

Daniel swung the flashlight beam toward the stone steps. As the light tracked along the damp masonry, he realized with a sickening jolt that the walls weren't made of ordinary stone. Embedded neatly, methodically into the mortar between the granite blocks were human teeth, hundreds of them, gleaming yellow and white in the harsh LED beam.

"Oh, God," Daniel whispered, taking an involuntary step back.

"They built the house on top of an ossuary," Elena sobbed, pressing her hands over Lucas’s ears so he couldn't hear the rhythmic, dripping sound echoing from the bottom of the stairs—*drip, drip, drip*—like a slow leak of thick red liquid. "My family didn't just buy this land, Daniel. They inherited the pact. And now they've come to collect on the third generation."

Before Daniel could answer, the heavy steel vault door behind them groaned loudly, the locking pins sliding back into place with a sharp metallic snap. The door swung open an inch, revealing not the hallway of their house, but a pitch-black forest under a blood-red moon.

A cold wind rushed into the vault, instantly extinguishing the flashlight.

In the sudden darkness, a heavy iron latch slammed down from the outside, locking the open vault door to the trees.
