Chapter 6 - The Floor of the Sanctuary

The heavy thud of Mateo’s body hitting the hard stone floor of Saint Jude’s Church echoed sharply against the vaulted ceiling, instantly followed by the frantic grunts of the federal agents subduing him.

"Don't move! Hands behind your back right now!" the lead investigator barked, pressing his knee firmly into Mateo’s spine while pinning his wrists together with a pair of heavy steel handcuffs that snapped shut with a definitive, chilling click.

Camila shrieked, covering her mouth with both hands as she watched her father pinned face-down against the floor where parishioners had knelt in prayer for generations. "Dad! Oh my god, leave him alone! You're hurting him!" she screamed, taking a wild step forward as if to intervene, before the second federal agent stepped smoothly into her path, holding up a flat palm to halt her advance.

"Stay back, miss. Do not interfere with a federal arrest, or you will be joining your father in cuffs," the agent warned coldly, his hand resting near his sidearm.

Elena stood frozen near the wooden pew, the heavy green velvet dress still clutched in her hands. The metallic weight of the hidden printing plate pressed heavily against her stomach, a tangible anchor tying her to a nightmare she never asked to be a part of. The air in the sanctuary smelled faintly of melting wax from the amber altar candles and the sharp, metallic tang of fear.

Sister Beatrice stepped quickly to Elena’s side, gently placing a supportive hand on her arm. "Breathe, Elena. Just breathe. You did the right thing."

The lead investigator stood up slowly from pinning Mateo, smoothing the lapels of his dark suit jacket with practiced ease. He looked down at Mateo, who was now wheezing against the cold stone, his face flushed with a mixture of rage and utter defeat. The agent motioned to the two subordinates.

"Get him up. Let's get him out through the side vestry before the evening parishioners start arriving," the lead investigator ordered, before turning his sharp, analytical gaze back toward Elena.

He walked slowly toward her, stopping a few feet away, his expression entirely unreadable behind his silver-rimmed glasses. He looked down at the heavy green dress bundled in her arms, noting the clumsy, thick basting stitches along the hemline—stitches that had been sewn with expert precision by hands that had spent decades perfecting their craft.

"Mrs. Morales... or is it Elena?" the agent asked, his tone professional yet unexpectedly respectful.

"Elena," she replied, her voice steady despite the adrenaline still pumping through her veins. "Just Elena. I am no longer connected to him, or his business."

"Elena," the investigator repeated, nodding slowly. "That dress contains the master engraving plate for counterfeit hundred-dollar bills that our task force has been tracking across three state lines for over six months. Mateo Morales used his legitimate garment factory as a front to smuggle these plates out of the country under the guise of custom export orders. You worked for him for thirty years. Did you truly have no idea?"

Elena looked the federal agent dead in the eye, refusing to flinch under his interrogative gaze. "If I had known, agent... do you honestly believe I would still be working twelve-hour shifts on an old Singer machine for standard wages? Do you think I would live in a two-room apartment with a leaking roof?"

The investigator held her gaze for a long, silent moment, searching her face for any sign of deceit. Finally, a faint, respectful nod confirmed he believed her.

"I don't think you did," the agent admitted quietly. He reached out, taking the heavy green dress from her arms with surprising gentleness, careful not to disturb the hidden contents inside. He handed it to the second agent, who immediately placed it inside an evidence bag. "You’ve handed us the missing piece of the puzzle, Elena. But your troubles might not be over just yet. Mateo has powerful associates who won't be happy that their supply chain just collapsed."

Elena swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. "What do you mean?"

Before the investigator could answer, Camila let out a hysterical laugh from across the aisle, wiping tears of sheer panic from her cheeks as she glared at Elena with pure venom.

May you like

"You think you won, old woman?" Camila spat out, her voice echoing shrilly through the sanctuary. "You think destroying my father ruins us? You just signed your own death warrant. Those clients aren't the kind of men who get arrested and stay quiet!"
