Chapter 11 - The Trap at the Threshold

The figure stepped out of the dark hallway into the dim yellow glow of the bedside lamp, lowering the hood of a heavy black sweatshirt. It wasn't the man in the trench coat. It was Camila.

Camila’s face was twisted into a cold, triumphant smirk. Her designer clothes were rumpled, her makeup slightly smeared from hours spent in holding cells and police interrogation rooms, but the venom in her eyes was sharper than ever. In her left hand, she dangled Elena’s green handbag by its broken strap; in her right, she casually held the black silenced pistol she had clearly retrieved from one of her father’s high-ranking criminal associates while making bail an hour ago.

"Surprised to see me, Elena?" Camila’s voice dripped with bitter satisfaction as she kicked the apartment door shut behind her with a dull thud, locking the deadbolt with a sharp, echoing clack.

Elena stood frozen beside the torn mattress, her hands covered in foam stuffing and dust. All the air had been sucked out of the room. The realization hit her with sickening clarity—Camila hadn't just been a spoiled boss's daughter playing fashion designer; she had been the active liaison between her father’s legitimate workshop and the criminal underworld financing their operation.

"Camila... how did you get out?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she slowly backed away against the wall. "The federal agents arrested you both."

"Money talks, Elena. Especially when you have offshore accounts funded by counterfeit millions," Camila laughed softly, walking further into the small studio apartment, her eyes scanning the modest room with absolute contempt. "The feds are bureaucrats. They let me out on a technicality while they process my father. But they didn't check my coat pockets when I left the precinct."

Camila stopped a few paces away, raising the silenced pistol just high enough for the cold steel barrel to catch the yellow light of the lamp.

"You really thought you could outsmart us, didn't you?" Camila hissed, stepping closer. "You think walking into a church with a holy nun makes you untouchable? You ruined everything we spent five years building. That printing plate was worth millions to our partners. Because of you, the whole network is scattering like rats."

"I didn't ruin anything, Camila—your father and you built a house of cards on lies and crime," Elena replied, finding a sudden, desperate reservoir of courage despite the gun pointed at her chest. "You threw away an honest legacy for greed. And now you're going to throw away your life too."

Camila’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage. The playful smirk vanished, replaced by a cold, murderous intent. She raised the gun barrel directly toward Elena’s chest, her finger tightening against the trigger.

"Shut your old mouth," Camila snarled. "Nobody is going to find you here. The landlord thinks you moved out, and the feds think you're hiding in a church. This is where your story ends, Elena."

Elena closed her eyes. She didn't scream. She didn't beg. She simply opened her mouth and began to whisper the words of the scripture card she had carried in her pocket for thirty years—the final prayer of surrender to a higher power.

Before Camila could squeeze the trigger, a deafening crash shook the entire apartment building as the front door was kicked completely off its hinges, splintering wood flying everywhere as heavy tactical boots rushed into the room.
