Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Sanctuary

Camila’s sharp eyes scanned the empty rows of pews, her designer heels clicking rhythmically against the stone floor of the church like a ticking clock counting down Elena’s remaining moments of safety. Her pink blouse caught the amber glow of the sanctuary lamps, making her look entirely out of place in the solemn, sacred space.
Elena pressed her back flat against the wooden pew, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She pulled the green handbag tighter into her lap, her fingers curling over the zipper as if she could physically weld the metal teeth shut with sheer willpower.
"Stay calm, Elena," Sister Beatrice whispered under her breath, her own posture stiffening as she cast a protective glance toward the approaching young woman. "She has no right to harass you here. This is holy ground."
"She knows I have the key," Elena whispered back, her voice trembling as cold sweat beaded along her hairline. "Or she knows the dress is in my bag. Why else would she follow me here straight from the workshop?"
"Elena! I know you’re in here," Camila’s voice rang out, clear and devoid of any warmth, bouncing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "Don't play hide and seek. My father sent me to retrieve something that belongs to the business."
Sister Beatrice stood up slowly from the pew, smoothing her modest habit as she stepped out into the aisle to block Camila’s direct line of sight to Elena. The nun stood tall, her expression serene yet unyielding, embodying a quiet strength that instantly halted Camila’s aggressive stride.
"Can I help you, young lady?" Sister Beatrice asked, her voice carrying a calm authority that commanded respect even in the vastness of the cathedral. "This is a house of prayer. If you are looking for someone, you will keep your voice down or take your business outside."
Camila stopped a few paces away, her face tightening with irritation. She looked past Sister Beatrice’s shoulder, spotting Elena cowering in the pew behind the nun. A thin, cold smile touched the corners of Camila’s mouth.
"Step aside, Sister. This doesn't concern you," Camila said sharply, pointing a manicured finger toward Elena. "That woman stole company property when she left the workshop. My father noticed the inventory discrepancy the second she walked out the door. We want the green garment back, right now."
Elena stood up slowly, clutching her handbag like a lifeline. She stepped out from behind Sister Beatrice, her chin raised despite the terror gripping her chest. "I didn't steal anything, Camila! Mateo fired me on the spot, and I packed my personal belongings. You gave me that dress to sew yourself three days ago!"
"You took a private client's prototype without authorization," Camila snapped, stepping forward with an air of absolute entitlement. "My father's business is legally protected. If you don't hand over that bag right this second, we are calling the police and pressing charges for industrial espionage."
The word espionage hung heavily in the air, absurd and terrifying all at once. Elena stared at the young woman she had watched grow up—a girl who used to run around the workshop floor eating candy wrappers now standing before her with ice in her veins, threatening to send her to prison.
"Espionage?" Elena’s voice cracked with righteous indignation. "I have worked for your father for thirty years! I have bled on these machines, sacrificed my Sundays, and stayed late into the night while you were still in college partying with your friends! And you accuse me of stealing?"
"Times change, Elena," Camila said coldly, closing the distance between them until she was standing just inches away. She lowered her voice to a venomous hiss, leaning in close so only Elena and Sister Beatrice could hear. "You saw the key, didn't you? You read the note. Give it back before you open a door you can never shut again. My father isn't the kind man you think he is."
Before Elena could formulate a response, a sudden commotion echoed from the front vestibule of the church. Heavy footsteps and a gruff, panicked voice interrupted the standoff.

"Camila! What the hell are you doing? Get out here right now!" Mateo’s voice boomed from the doorway, breathless and erratic, as he rushed down the aisle with a look of absolute terror plastered across his face.
