Chapter 12 - The Raid in the Night

The splintering crash of the apartment door being blown completely off its hinges shattered the tense silence of the room.
"Federal agents! Drop the weapon! Drop it right now!" a booming voice echoed through the small studio apartment.
Camila spun around in absolute shock, her eyes widening in horror as three armed federal agents poured through the shattered doorway, assault rifles raised and laser sights painting a constellation of red dots across her chest and face.
"Don't move! Hands on your head! Drop the gun!" the lead investigator ordered, stepping forward with his service weapon drawn and locked on Camila.
For a split second, Camila’s finger twitched against the trigger of the silenced pistol, her eyes darting between Elena and the federal agents as desperate, suicidal madness flashed across her features. But the overwhelming tactical superiority of the heavily armed agents left no room for error. With a frustrated sob of pure rage, Camila dropped the pistol to the linoleum floor and threw her hands up over her head, collapsing to her knees against the edge of the bed.
"Camila Morales, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, racketeering, and attempted murder of a federal witness," the lead investigator barked as the other two agents moved in swiftly, slamming plastic zip-ties around Camila’s wrists with practiced efficiency and hauling her roughly to her feet.
Elena stood frozen against the wall, her chest heaving as the adrenaline crashed, leaving her legs feeling like lead. She slid slowly down the wall until she was sitting on the floor, burying her face in her hands as the terrifying reality of what had just narrowly missed happening finally caught up with her.
The lead investigator walked over, dismissing his subordinates as they escorted a screaming, cursing Camila out through the shattered doorway into the hallway. The agent knelt down on one knee in front of Elena, his stern expression replaced by one of genuine, deep-set concern.
"Are you alright, Elena?" he asked softly, extending a steady hand to help her up.
Elena looked up, taking his hand and letting him pull her to her feet. "How... how did you find me? I thought I lost you all at the church."
The investigator offered a faint, reassuring smile. "We never stopped tracking Camila's communications after she made bail. When our surveillance pinged her cell phone moving toward this district an hour ago, we knew she was coming back for loose ends. You were the primary target, Elena. We followed her right to your doorstep."
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "Is it over now? Are they truly finished?"
"The syndicate's primary distribution network in this state has been completely dismantled. Mateo and Camila will be facing decades behind bars, along with the higher-ups we managed to round up tonight," the investigator confirmed, standing up and dusting off his knees. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, sealed evidence bag containing Elena’s scripture card, handing it to her carefully. "You're safe now, Elena. But I'd recommend staying with a friend or finding a secure place outside the city for the next few days while the final arrests are processed."
Elena took the small card, pressing it tightly against her chest. She looked around her devastated apartment—the torn mattress, the broken door, the remnants of a life completely upended.
"I know just the place," Elena whispered.
Two hours later, as the first pale rays of dawn began to paint the eastern sky in shades of gold and amber, Elena sat once again on the quiet wooden pew inside Saint Jude’s Church, watching the morning sun illuminate the altar through the stained-glass windows.
Sister Beatrice walked down the aisle carrying a warm cup of herbal tea, setting it gently beside Elena before sitting down on the pew next to her.
"You survived the storm, Hermana," Sister Beatrice murmured softly, wrapping a comforting arm around Elena’s shoulders.
"Yes," Elena replied, looking down at her empty hands—hands that had lost their scissors, their workshop, and their livelihood, but had somehow managed to weave a path through the darkest night of her life. "The storm is over. But what do I do with my hands now?"

Before Sister Beatrice could answer, the heavy oak doors of the church creaked open, and a young woman with tear-stained cheeks and a bruised face nervously stepped inside the nave, holding a bundle of green fabric in her arms.
