Chapter 13 - The Stranger at the Altar

The heavy oak doors of Saint Jude’s Church closed with a soft, muted click as the young woman walked slowly down the center aisle. She looked exhausted, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, clutching a bundle of green fabric against her chest as if it were the only fragile thing keeping her anchored to the world.

Elena and Sister Beatrice turned simultaneously to watch the stranger approach. As the young woman drew closer under the amber glow of the sanctuary lamps, Elena recognized her instantly—it was Clara, one of the junior seamstresses from Mateo’s workshop who had kept her head down and her mouth shut out of sheer terror during the entire ordeal.

Clara stopped a few paces away from the pew, her lower lip trembling as she looked down at the floor before finally raising her terrified eyes to meet Elena’s.

"Hermana Elena... please, you have to help me," Clara choked out, her voice cracking as tears spilled over her eyelashes. She extended the bundle of green fabric forward with shaking hands.

Elena stood up slowly, stepping out from the pew. She looked at the fabric—it was another unfinished garment, identical in weave and cut to the one Mateo had forced her to sew three days ago.

"Clara? What is this?" Elena asked gently, stepping closer to inspect the trembling girl. "Why aren't you at the workshop? The police shut the place down hours ago."

"I know," Clara sobbed, fresh tears streaming down her face. "When the federal agents raided the building last night, I managed to slip out the back exit with a few unfinished prototypes before they locked down the inventory. Mateo’s associates... they don't just want the printing plates, Elena. They left messages at my apartment an hour ago. They think I know where the rest of the secondary shipments are hidden. I have nowhere to go. The police are overwhelmed, and my family lives out of state."

Sister Beatrice stood up, walking over to place a steady, comforting hand on Clara’s shoulder. "Child, you are safe here. No one will harm you inside this church."

"Safe?" Clara cried out, her voice echoing in the vast, empty nave. "They killed my roommate's dog this morning as a warning! They are hunting everyone who ever touched a needle in that workshop!"

Elena stared at the young seamstress. A profound, overwhelming wave of empathy washed over her grief. She looked down at her own empty hands—hands that no longer had a boss, a uniform, or a corporate salary, but still possessed the God-given talent and resilience that no corrupt employer could ever steal away.

"Clara, look at me," Elena said, her voice carrying a quiet, unshakable authority that instantly silenced the panicked girl's sobbing.

Clara sniffled, looking up into Elena’s lined, weathered face.

"Mateo took my scissors," Elena continued, a faint, resolute smile touching the corners of her mouth. "He took my table, my livelihood, and thirty years of false loyalty. But he didn't take my skill. And he didn't take my soul."

Elena reached out, taking the unfinished green garment from Clara’s trembling arms and laying it gently across the wooden pew. She ran her calloused fingers along the unfinished hemline, feeling the familiar, comforting texture of the fabric.

"What are we going to do?" Clara whispered, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her blouse.

Before Elena could answer, the church doors burst open once more with a sudden, alarming crash, revealing a tall, imposing figure standing in the doorway, silhouetted against the bright morning light.
