Chapter 8

Arthur reached into the deep pocket of his trench coat and produced a worn leather-bound journal that looked remarkably similar to the digital ledgers Elena had spent the last six months decrypting. He tossed the heavy book onto the center table with a dull thud that echoed through the cavernous ballroom.
"Everything Julian and Clara stole, everything Marcus covered up, and every fraudulent signature from the past three decades is documented right there in my handwriting," Arthur said, his hollow eyes fixed on Marcus. "I didn't die in that fire, Marcus. I was locked away in a private sanatorium in Switzerland by your father, financed by the very dividends that should have gone to Elena's father."
Elena stepped forward, her fingers tracing the worn leather cover of the journal. "If you had this evidence all along, why wait until tonight? Why let Clara and Julian run amok?"
"Because a wolf doesn't reveal itself until the sheep are fully gathered in the pen," Arthur replied evenly, pulling up a velvet chair and sitting down with deliberate slowness. "I needed Julian to embezzle enough capital to trigger the federal oversight clauses. Only then could the old corporate charter be legally dissolved, returning every single share back to the rightful direct bloodline."
Marcus sank heavily into a neighboring chair, defeated, his hands trembling as he realized the sheer scale of the trap that had been springing around him for years. "You manipulated Julian into marrying Clara," Marcus whispered, the realization dawning with crushing weight. "You were the anonymous source who fed Clara the tips about the firm's hidden accounts."
"Clara’s greed was her own undoing; I merely pointed her in the direction of the safe," Arthur corrected softly. "She wanted power, Julian wanted status, and you wanted absolute control. You all danced to the tune I wrote from the moment I returned to the country six months ago."
Elena looked between the two elderly brothers, the magnitude of the generational conspiracy crashing down on her shoulders. "And what about me? Was I just another pawn in your grand revenge scheme?"
May you like
Arthur looked up, a flicker of genuine warmth softening his scarred face for a split second. "You were never a pawn, Elena. You were the only honest auditor left in a family of thieves. I brought you here to reclaim your birthright, not to watch you get trampled."
Before Elena could process the tangled web of manipulations, the sound of heavy footsteps running down the main hallway interrupted them, followed by the frantic voice of the lead detective shouting orders from the foyer.
