Chapter 1

The shattered remnants of champagne flutes glistened under the crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom like diamonds scattered by a careless thief. The air was thick with the suffocating scent of white lilies and expensive French perfume, masking the underlying tension that had been brewing for months. Clara stood tall in her immaculate white wedding dress, her blonde hair styled into an intricate braid, pressing the heel of her satin bridal shoe directly against Elena’s cheekbone. Elena lay flat on the polished wooden floor, her maroon dress pooling around her like spilled wine, her dark hair tangled against the grain of the oak.

"You really thought you could expose me and walk away unscathed, didn't you, Elena?" Clara sneered, her voice dripping with a cold, calculated venom that cut through the silent ballroom. "You thought your little secret files would destroy everything I've built?"

Elena stared up, her eyes wide with sheer terror, her chest heaving as she fought for breath against the humiliating weight of the shoe. "Clara, you're insane," Elena gasped, her voice trembling violently. "Everyone is going to see what you really are. This isn't just about us anymore; the police already have the digital ledger."

"Let them try," Clara laughed, a sharp, unhinged sound that echoed off the mahogany walls. "Julian gave me everything, and no pathetic interloper is going to take it away."

Julian, the groom, dressed in his sharp dark suit and black tie, charged forward across the slick floor with blind fury, desperate to rescue Elena. But physics proved cruelly unforgiving as his polished leather soles hit a slick patch of spilled champagne. His feet flew out from under him, and he wiped out hard, slamming his face directly onto the unyielding hardwood with a sickening crunch. He lay flat on his back, groaning in agony as he clutched his bleeding nose, while Clara dropped her shoe, her hands flying to her cheeks in sudden, theatrical horror. Amidst the stunned silence of the gathering, a low, metallic chime echoed from Julian’s abandoned suit pocket as his phone lit up, displaying a notification from an unknown number.
