Chapter 14

The morning sun cast a brilliant, warming glow across the sprawling plaza outside the corporate headquarters, melting the remnants of the midnight rain into sparkling puddles that reflected the awakening city. Elena stepped out through the grand revolving doors of the lobby, drawing in a deep breath of fresh, crisp morning air that tasted like freedom.
Arthur stood beside her on the granite steps, watching the steady stream of commuters beginning to fill the sidewalks below. "What are your plans for the morning, Elena? The board meeting is scheduled for noon to officially ratify the new corporate charter."
"I think I need to visit one last place before the meeting," Elena said softly, turning to look up at the older man with a genuine, gentle smile. "A cemetery on the coastal highway."
Arthur nodded slowly, a deep understanding passing through his weathered eyes. "Take my car. The keys are in the ignition. Your father would have been immensely proud of the woman you've become, Elena. You carried his legacy through the fire and brought it out into the light."

"I couldn't have done it without your ledger, Uncle Arthur," Elena replied, slipping the worn leather-bound book safely into her handbag. "See you at noon."
She walked down the granite steps toward the vintage black sedan parked at the curb, her maroon dress moving gracefully in the morning breeze. As she slid behind the steering wheel and started the engine, she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the rearview mirror. The terror and shock of the wedding reception were entirely gone, replaced by the calm, resolute gaze of someone who had stared down the darkest corners of human greed and emerged victorious.
