Chapter 12

Clara sprinted down the narrow concrete corridor leading from the sub-basement vault, her torn white wedding dress catching on the rough corners of the concrete walls, ripping further until long strips of satin trailed behind her like a ghost's shroud. Her breath came in ragged, hyperventilating gasps as her heels clicked frantically against the floor.
"You won't take me!" Clara yelled back over her shoulder, not daring to slow her pace as she rounded the corner toward the freight elevator shaft.
Elena and Arthur pursued her at a measured, steady pace, refusing to panic. They knew the layout of the sub-basement better than anyone; there were no secondary exits on this level, only the high-security perimeter doors that locked automatically from the main security desk upstairs.
Clara reached the heavy steel doors of the freight elevator and hammered frantically on the call button with the palm of her hand, only to find the indicator light glowing a steady, impassable red. She spun around, trapping herself against the cold metal doors, her chest heaving as she raised the heavy canvas bag defensively.
"Don't come any closer!" Clara threatened, her voice cracking with hysteria as she swept her gaze back and forth between Arthur and Elena. "I'll throw the bonds down the incinerator shaft! You'll never see a dime of it!"
"Go ahead," Arthur said evenly, stopping ten feet away with his hands resting quietly in his trench coat pockets. "Those bonds are serial-numbered bearer instruments issued under my corporate registry. The moment they leave this building, the serial numbers are flagged as stolen property worldwide. You couldn't spend a single cent without triggering an Interpol alert."

Clara’s arms dropped slightly, the heavy canvas bag slipping a few inches down her forearm as the crushing reality of her complete checkmate finally sank in. Her knees buckled beneath her, and she slid slowly down the cold metal door until she sat huddled in a pathetic heap on the concrete floor, her ruined white dress pooling around her like a shroud.
"Why won't you just let me win?" Clara sobbed softly, the fierce venom completely draining from her voice, leaving only a hollow, broken shell of a woman.
