Chapter 15

The coastal highway stretched out before the black sedan like a ribbon of dark silk, bordered on one side by rugged cliffs dropping sharply into the foaming blue Pacific and on the other by rolling green hills dotted with wildflowers. Elena drove at a steady, peaceful pace, the hum of the engine blending harmoniously with the sound of the crashing waves below.

She pulled the car off onto the gravel shoulder near a quiet, secluded cemetery perched high on the ocean bluffs, where rows of white headstones stood like silent sentinels guarding the memories of the past. Walking through the iron gates, she navigated the familiar stone pathways until she reached a shaded plot overlooking the vast, open sea.

She knelt down beside the weathered marble headstone bearing her father’s name, gently brushing away a few fallen oak leaves from the engraved lettering. Pulling the yellowed envelope and a small copy of the new corporate charter from her bag, she placed them carefully at the base of the stone, secured beneath a smooth river rock so the coastal wind wouldn't carry them away.

"You can rest now, Dad," Elena whispered, her voice steady and clear against the roaring expanse of the ocean. "The books are finally balanced. The truth is out, and the house is ours again."

A sudden, warm gust of wind swept across the bluff, rustling the leaves of the nearby pine trees and carrying the salt spray of the ocean into the air like a silent blessing. Elena stood up slowly, brushing the dust from her maroon dress, and took one last long look at the endless horizon where the blue sky met the sparkling water. The nightmare of the wedding reception, the shattered crystal, and the polished hardwood floor of reckoning felt like a lifetime away. She turned her back on the past and walked steadily back toward the car, ready to step into the bright, unwritten chapters of her own future.
