The Choice

Several hotel guests watched from the safety of the interior lobby, hesitant to step onto the rain-swept, glass-strewn terrace.
Sarah saw the scene immediately as the golf cart pulled up to the portico. She turned to Leo. "Take Maya inside to the lobby immediately."
"Mommy, what about that lady?" Maya asked, pointing through the rain. "She fell down."
"Stay with Leo, baby. I’ll be right back," Sarah said.
Without hesitating, Sarah pulled off her open robe, wrapped it tightly around her hands for protection, and stepped out into the pouring rain.
She navigated the slick tiles carefully, kicking larger chunks of broken glass out of her path until she reached Victoria.
Victoria looked up, soaked and trembling, her mascara running down her cheeks in dark streaks. When she saw Sarah kneeling beside her, her eyes widened in shock and embarrassment.
"Can you move your toes?" Sarah asked calmly, her voice cutting through the howl of the storm.

"I... I think it’s broken," Victoria gasped, clutching her swollen left ankle. "The door blew open and hit me... I couldn't get up."
"Put your arm around my neck," Sarah commanded gently, slipping her arm beneath Victoria’s shoulders. "Lean your weight on me. We need to get you inside before the roof gutter gives out."
