An Unexpected Ally

That afternoon, while Maya slept peacefully in their air-conditioned bungalow, a knock sounded at Sarah’s door.
Sarah opened it cautiously. Standing outside was Leo, the young concierge who had delivered the gift box the previous day. He was holding a tray with two tall glasses of freshly pressed tropical juice and a bowl of fresh fruit.
"Compliments of the house, ma'am," Leo said softly, offering a respectful nod.
"Thank you, Leo, but we didn't order this," Sarah said, feeling defensive.
"I know," Leo replied, stepping closer so his voice wouldn't carry. "I wanted to apologize for yesterday. The five-hundredth guest promotion... it was real, but the front desk was instructed by the regional director to ensure it went to a VIP profile guest for social media marketing. You and your daughter were originally the five-hundredth registered arrivals at check-in yesterday morning."
Sarah stared at him, stunned. "What?"
"The computer flagged your reservation code as a foundation-sponsored stay," Leo explained, looking down at his shoes with genuine remorse. "Management manually adjusted the guest counter so Ms. Sterling would receive the box when she checked out by the pool. I had to follow protocol, but... it wasn't right."

Sarah leaned against the doorframe, a hollow laugh escaping her lips. "Of course. Even kindness here has a price tier."
"I found something else," Leo added, looking around the quiet corridor. "I checked the maintenance logs. The filtration intake at the deep end of the main pool clogged two hours ago. The technician pulled a platinum chain out of the impeller."
