The Broken Clasp

The next morning, an unusual commotion erupted along the pool deck. Hotel security guards in crisp white uniforms were meticulously searching beneath sun loungers, flowerbeds, and umbrella stands.

Victoria Sterling was pacing near the towel station, her face flushed with fury, waving her hands wildly at the resort manager, Mr. Alvarez.

"I took it off right before I went for my swim!" Victoria shrieked. "I left it wrapped in my silk scarf right on this table! It was a fifty-thousand-dollar custom piece from your executive collection, and now it’s gone!"

Mr. Alvarez, a dignified man in his fifties with tired eyes, bowed respectfully. "Ms. Sterling, our staff is conducting a thorough sweep of the perimeter. If it fell into the pool drains or was misplaced, we will locate it."

"Misplaced?" Victoria sneered, her eyes scanning the deck until they landed squarely on Sarah and Maya, who were sitting quietly on a shaded bench near the children’s splash zone. "I didn't misplace anything. I know exactly who was eyeing it yesterday."

Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. She stood up instantly, stepping in front of Maya.

"Don't you dare," Sarah said, her voice shaking with restrained outrage.

Victoria strode across the wooden deck, her heels clicking sharply. "You were hovering right around my chair yesterday afternoon. And that child of yours was staring right at the box!"

"My daughter did not touch your necklace," Sarah said, each word enunciated with icy precision. "She has been in our room since seven o'clock this morning."

"Then let security search your room!" Victoria demanded. "If you have nothing to hide, open your bags!"
