The Unspoken Debt

The storm passed by nightfall, leaving the island air clean, cool, and fragrant with wet earth.
Sarah was in their bungalow, packing their suitcases. Their flight home was scheduled for the following afternoon. Maya was sitting on the rug, carefully organizing the seashells Leo had helped her collect at the cove.
A quiet knock came at the door.
Sarah opened it. Standing on the porch, leaning heavily on a pair of wooden crutches, was Victoria. She was dressed in simple sweatpants and an oversized hoodie, her face completely free of makeup. She looked younger, smaller, and remarkably vulnerable.
"May I come in for a minute?" Victoria asked softly.
Sarah stepped back, leaving the door open. "Come in."
Victoria slowly maneuvered herself into the room, leaning against the edge of the dresser. She looked down at Maya, who looked back up with bright, curious eyes.
"I brought something," Victoria said, reaching into her pocket. She didn't pull out the diamond necklace or a wad of cash.

Instead, she held out a small, beautifully bound sketchbook with watercolor paints and fine brushes.
"I noticed your drawing earlier," Victoria said, her voice cracking slightly as she addressed Maya. "You have a very special eye for beauty. I... I wanted you to have proper tools for your art."
