Chapter 8: The Return of Victor Sterling

The atmosphere at the Sterling estate had grown dangerously quiet by evening. The domestic staff moved like ghosts through the cavernous rooms, whispering among themselves about the boardroom blowout and the impending police investigation. Julian was working late in the study, organizing the final evidentiary packets for the district attorney’s office, when the sound of a luxury sedan crunching up the gravel driveway caught his attention.
Moments later, the heavy front doors swung open. Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor—not the measured tread of Clara, but the hurried, anxious steps of a man running out of time.
Victor Sterling burst into the study without knocking. Thirty-five years old, with disheveled dark hair and an expensive suit wrinkled from a rushed cross-country flight, Victor looked frantic. His eyes were wide, darting around the room before landing squarely on Julian.
“Where is she?” Victor demanded, breathing heavily. “Where is my wife?”
“Mrs. Sterling is currently upstairs packing her bags and consulting with her criminal defense attorneys,” Julian replied calmly, not bothering to stand up from the desk. “Welcome home, Victor. You missed quite a board meeting.”
Victor slammed his briefcase onto the edge of the desk, leaning over it with a desperate expression. “Julian, you don’t understand. This whole thing—the foundation funds, the pressure on Delilah—it’s a misunderstanding. Clara is unstable, yes, but she’s been under immense pressure from the board for months.”
“Pressure doesn't give someone the right to shatter a mirror over a pregnant woman’s body, Victor,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave in sheer contempt. “And it certainly doesn't excuse you abandoning your responsibilities while hiding behind your wife’s intimidation tactics.”
Victor ran a hand through his hair, looking suddenly defeated. He slumped into the leather armchair opposite the desk. “I didn't want any of this. My father set up this trust with impossible conditions. He knew Clara was ruthless, and he knew I lacked the backbone to stand up to her. The marriage was arranged to merge two dying fortunes. We haven't shared a life in five years.”
“Yet you found time to father a child with Delilah,” Julian noted sharply.
Victor winced, the truth hitting him hard. “I care about Delilah. I tried to protect her by keeping her away from Clara, but Clara has eyes everywhere in this house. When she found out about the baby, she threatened to ruin both of us. I was a coward, Julian. I flew to New York to try and secure offshore capital so I could pay Clara off and get Delilah safely out of the country before any of this happened.”
“Well, your timing is impeccable,” Julian said drily. “The police have the security footage, the financial audits are in the hands of the authorities, and Delilah is currently under police protection at the hospital.”
Victor stared at Julian in absolute horror. “Is she safe?”
May you like
“For the first time since she set foot in this estate, yes,” Julian replied. “The question is, Victor, what are you going to do to make it right?”
