Chapter 10: The Gathering Storm Outside

By midnight, a steady autumn rain began to lash against the grand windows of the Sterling estate. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension as local law enforcement officers arrived at the front entrance. Two uniformed deputies accompanied by a senior detective presented a formal warrant for Clara Sterling’s arrest on charges of aggravated assault and financial fraud.
Julian watched from the landing of the grand staircase as Marcus opened the heavy oak doors to let the authorities in. The crystal chandeliers overhead cast a cold, clinical light over the marble floor where the ornate gold mirror had been shattered just days prior. The jagged edges of the frame had been cleared away, leaving a bare, empty space on the wall—a permanent scar on the opulent hallway.
Clara descended the stairs escorted by her private defense attorney, who was frantically talking on his mobile phone. She wore a tailored black trench coat over her clothes, her blonde hair pinned back tightly. Her face was a mask of cold, defiant pride. She refused to look down at the deputies waiting below.
As she reached the bottom of the landing, Detective Vance—no relation to Julian—stepped forward, holding out a pair of silver handcuffs.
“Clara Sterling, you are under arrest for the aggravated assault of Delilah Hayes and ongoing financial fraud,” the detective stated clearly, his voice echoing in the grand foyer.
Clara didn't flinch. She held her wrists out deliberately, her eyes locking onto Julian, who stood observing quietly from the upper landing. “You think this is a victory, Julian?” she whispered loud enough for him to hear. “People like me don't stay locked away. The system was built by people like my grandfather. We always land on our feet.”
“People who believe the law doesn't apply to them eventually find out gravity is universal, Clara,” Julian replied calmly from above.
The handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, metallic ring that punctuated the silence of the estate. Clara turned and walked out into the cold autumn rain, flanked by deputies, her head held high in a final, desperate display of arrogance.

Victor watched from the doorway of the study, standing alone in the shadows. He didn't follow her out. He simply closed the door, shutting the chapter of his life defined by fear, intimidation, and gilded cages.
