Chapter 7: The Boardroom Confrontation

The executive boardroom of Sterling Enterprises on the fiftieth floor of downtown Chicago was a monument to corporate power. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the skyline under a gray, overcast sky. The long mahogany conference table was surrounded by five senior board members, all of whom wore expressions of grim anxiety.

Julian stood at the head of the table, clicking a remote to project the high-definition security footage from the grand hallway of the estate onto the massive projection screen. The video played in chilling silence: Clara violently slamming Delilah against the ornate gold mirror, the glass shattering, the frantic crying, and Julian stepping in to take control.

Board member Thomas Sterling, Victor’s uncle and the nominal head of the committee, rubbed his temples with a look of profound exhaustion. “Turn it off, Julian. We’ve seen enough.”

Julian clicked the remote, plunging the room back into the soft glow of ambient lighting. “That is the woman currently representing the face of your brand, gentlemen. Not only is she engaging in violent criminal behavior on estate grounds, but she is also systematically misusing corporate charitable funds to cover up personal liabilities.”

Clara, who had entered the room uninvited just moments before the meeting began, stood near the doorway wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a severe ponytail, and her expression was icy.

“This is a private family dispute being weaponized by an overreaching consultant who clearly has personal ambitions,” Clara stated, her voice ringing clear and authoritative across the boardroom. “Delilah was an employee who breached confidentiality and stole company property. My reaction was extreme, yes, but it was provoked.”

“Provoked to the point of nearly causing a miscarriage?” Thomas Sterling challenged, looking at his niece with disgust. “Clara, the video has already been reviewed by corporate legal counsel. The liability exposure is catastrophic. If this leaks to the press, the stock will drop fifty points before the closing bell.”

“It won't leak if we handle it internally,” Clara said smoothly, stepping closer to the table. “I will offer the girl a settlement. She signs a nondisclosure agreement, leaves the state, and this meeting never happened.”

“That option is no longer on the table,” Julian said, turning to face her directly. “Delilah has formally filed criminal charges of assault and extortion. Furthermore, the financial audit reveals that over two hundred thousand dollars of foundation funds were routed through your personal accounts to purchase silence regarding your husband’s affairs.”

Clara’s composure fractured. She stepped forward, her eyes blazing with fury. “You miserable, manipulative bastard! You’ve ruined everything!”

“No, Clara,” Julian replied coldly. “You did that all by yourself.”
