Chapter 4: The Unspoken Distance

Jax took Clara and the children to a quiet, secluded café near the park. Sitting in a booth away from the crowd, Clara drank warm tea while Leo and Lily shared a plate of pancakes, already talking in the quiet, instinctual way twins often do.

""The doctor said my memory might come back in pieces, or not at all,"" Clara explained quietly, staring at her hands. ""A year ago, I started seeing flashes—this park, the fountain, a house with a blue door. I saved enough money from working at a bakery to buy bus tickets here. But when I got here today, I panicked. I felt like a stranger in my own life.""

Jax reached across the table and placed his hand over hers. Her skin was cool, her fingers rougher than before, bearing the marks of years of hard manual labor.

""You're not a stranger, Clara,"" Jax said gently. ""You're home. Or at least, you're close to it.""

""I missed five years of Lily's life, Jax,"" she said, tears glistening in her eyes. ""And I raised Leo without his father. How do we fix something so broken?""

""We don't try to fix it all in one day,"" Jax replied. ""We start by taking one step at a time. Together.""

Despite his reassuring words, Jax felt a heavy weight in his chest. Clara was back, but she wasn't the same woman who had left. She was guarded, bruised by circumstance, and deeply afraid of ruining the stable life Jax had built for Lily. Reconnecting would require more than just love; it would require patience, forgiveness, and healing.
