Chapter 7: The Return to the Penthouse

The private elevator of the Sterling Tower hummed softly as it ascended forty floors above the glittering, rain-slicked streets of San Francisco. Inside the mirrored cabin, the silence was absolute. Sebastian wore his dark suit once more, immaculately pressed, his expression carefully sculpted into a mask of sullen submission. Clara stood beside him in a simple, high-necked cream dress—a deliberate nod to the outfit she wore during the attack, serving as a silent, psychological reminder of what had transpired.
The elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing the cavernous, glass-walled penthouse that served as Helena Sterling’s private domain. The decor was aggressively opulent: white marble floors, priceless modern art installations, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the stormy bay.
Helena sat at the far end of a long white leather sofa, her posture rigid as a statue. She wore another cream-colored blazer, perfectly matching the one from the night of the incident, her blonde updo flawless. A single diamond ring sparkled on her index finger as she slowly stirred a cup of Earl Grey tea. She did not look up immediately when the elevator chimed, letting the oppressive silence stretch out to establish dominance.
"You took your time, Sebastian," Helena said coldly, finally raising her piercing blue eyes. She glanced at Clara standing slightly behind him, her lips curling into a condescending smirk. "And you brought the incubator back. How brave of you."
Sebastian stepped forward, his shoulders slightly slumped, playing the role of the chastised son to absolute perfection. "We’re out of options, Mother. Your asset freeze hit my accounts faster than anticipated. We came to talk terms."
Helena set her teacup down on the glass coffee table with a sharp clink. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees, her eyes narrowing with predatory satisfaction. "Terms? You don't have terms, Sebastian. You have obedience. You sign the relinquishment of your voting shares, you issue a public apology for your violent outburst, and Clara agrees to check into the Sterling Private Clinic for full-time medical supervision until the child is born."
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs, every instinct screaming at her to lunge across the room. But she kept her breathing slow and measured, maintaining the restrained composure Sebastian had drilled into her during the car ride over.

"And if we refuse?" Sebastian asked, his voice deliberately carrying a hint of pathetic desperation.
Helena stood up slowly, walking toward them with the measured, predatory grace of a cat cornering a wounded mouse. She stopped just inches from Sebastian, her gaze piercing right through him. "If you refuse, I will ensure Clara’s father loses his medical funding within the hour, and I will personally bankrupt you both until you are living on the streets. You built nothing without this family, Sebastian. You are nothing without me."
