Chapter 13: Healing the Past

The medical clinic in downtown San Francisco was bright, sterile, and entirely devoid of the oppressive, gilded intimidation of the Sterling private facilities. Dr. Henderson, a warm-eyed obstetrician with silver hair and a gentle bedside manner, smiled as she finished updating Clara’s chart on her tablet.
"Well, Mrs. Sterling," Dr. Henderson said, looking up from her screen with genuine professional satisfaction. "Your blood pressure is stable, your hormone levels have completely normalized, and the baby’s heartbeat is strong and steady. Whatever changes you've made in your living situation over the past couple of weeks have worked wonders."
Clara let out a long, shaky breath of pure relief, pressing a hand to her abdomen. Beside her in the examination room chair, Sebastian reached out, squeezing her hand tightly.
"She's completely out of danger?" Sebastian asked, his voice carrying a lingering trace of protective anxiety.
"Barring any unforeseen circumstances, yes," Dr. Henderson assured him, smiling warmly. "The extreme physical toll she was experiencing was entirely stress-induced—constant monitoring, rigid dietary controls, and psychological pressure. Remove the cage, and the bird finally heals. I want her to continue resting, avoiding high-stress corporate environments, and eating whatever sounds good to her."
"She can eat whatever she wants," Sebastian declared firmly, causing Clara to laugh out loud—a bright, musical sound that echoed happily off the white clinic walls.
As they walked out of the medical center into the crisp afternoon sunshine, the bustling city around them felt entirely different than it had weeks ago. The towering glass skyscrapers no longer looked like monoliths of oppression, but merely architectural background noise to their new, reclaimed reality.
"What do you say we stop by your father's studio?" Sebastian suggested as they reached his black sedan parked at the curb.
Clara paused, her eyes widening slightly. "My father's studio? You haven't mentioned him in days. How is he?"
"Dr. Henderson’s clinic sent the updated medical grant release to his facility yesterday," Sebastian explained, opening the passenger door for her with careful gentleness. "The funding your mother tried to manipulate is now permanently secured under an independent trust that she can never touch. Your father’s medical treatments are fully covered for the rest of his life, and his art restoration workshop is back in operation."
Tears pricked the corners of Clara’s eyes, though this time they were tears of profound, unadulterated gratitude. She reached up, framing Sebastian’s face with both hands, pulling him down to press a tender kiss against his cheek.

"You didn't have to do that," she whispered.
"I had to do a lot of things," Sebastian replied softly, resting his forehead against hers. "And I'm finally doing them right."
