Chapter 4

Morning sunlight pierced through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of Sea-Cliff House, casting long, geometric shadows across the hardwood floors. Clara sat at the modern kitchen island, nursing a cup of black coffee while staring at the glowing screen of her laptop. Across from her, Sebastian was already on his second burner phone, his laptop displaying complex corporate dashboards filled with red warning lines and fluctuating stock tickers.

"She didn't waste any time," Sebastian muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced speed.

"What has she done?" Clara asked, leaning forward, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"She’s frozen the joint accounts. All of them," Sebastian said without looking up. "Not just our personal checking—she’s initiated a hostile asset freeze on my private venture capital fund. She’s claiming mental incompetence due to 'marital distress' and is petitioning the board to strip me of my executive voting rights."

Clara gasped, dropping her spoon against the ceramic bowl. "Can she legally do that? Your grandfather left you those shares directly!"

"Under ordinary circumstances, no," Sebastian replied, finally stopping his typing and looking up with a grim smile. "Under ordinary circumstances, the board requires a unanimous vote of the trustees to initiate an emergency conservatorship. But Helena has three of the five trustees in her pocket through various shell companies and charitable donations. As of 6:00 AM this morning, I am officially locked out of Sterling Enterprises."

"We have no money?" Clara asked, a cold knot forming in her stomach. "Your cards won't work?"

"My personal cards tied to the Sterling umbrella are dead," Sebastian confirmed calmly. He pulled a small, unassuming black card from his wallet and tossed it across the counter. "Good thing I anticipated this day years ago. This account is offshore, registered independently under a sole proprietorship I established when I sold my first tech startup before joining the family firm. It has enough to sustain us comfortably for the next ten years, even if we never touch a Sterling dime again."

Clara stared at the black card, a mixture of disbelief and profound relief washing over her. "You planned for this? You knew she would turn on you?"

"I knew what she was capable of," Sebastian said, standing up and walking around the island to stand beside her chair. He placed a hand on the back of her seat, leaning down slightly. "My mother loves power more than her own children. When my older brother, Julian, refused to enter the corporate fold ten years ago, she disowned him publicly, cut him off completely, and pretended he never existed. I swore I would never let myself be trapped like that. But I stayed too long, and I dragged you into it. That's my real regret."

"Julian?" Clara repeated, frowning. "Your mother told me Julian died in a climbing accident in Switzerland."

A bitter, humorless laugh escaped Sebastian's lips. "That was the official press release. In reality, Julian packed his bags, married a ski instructor, and walked away from the Sterling name forever. Mother erased him from the family tree so thoroughly that most people forgot he was ever born." Sebastian's eyes darkened with sudden realization. "Clara... Julian is still alive. And if anyone knows how to dismantle Helena’s legal stranglehold on us, it’s him."
