Chapter 6: The Trap is Set

The rain began to fall in heavy, slanting sheets against the glass panels of Sea-Cliff House, blurring the ocean view into a grey smudge. Sebastian sat at the kitchen counter, reviewing a heavily encrypted blueprint of the Sterling Enterprises downtown skyscraper displayed on his laptop. The phone call with Julian had ended hours ago, leaving behind a ticking clock and a dangerous blueprint for survival.
Clara walked up behind him, placing a warm, steady hand on his shoulder. "Are you sure we can trust him, Sebastian? You haven't seen your brother in ten years. What if this is a trap—what if Julian made a deal with your mother?"
Sebastian covered her hand with his own, turning his head to look up at her with reassurance in his dark eyes. "Julian hates Helena even more than I do. She didn't just disown him; she systematically destroyed his fiancée's family business when Julian refused to break off the engagement. He lost everything in a single week. Trust me, if there is anyone on this earth who wants to see my mother’s empire burn down to the foundation, it’s my brother."
Just as Sebastian finished speaking, his burner phone buzzed violently against the marble countertop. An incoming text message flashed across the screen from an unknown, encrypted number.
The queen has made her move. Invitation delivered to your secure server. She wants a summit tomorrow at 2:00 PM sharp at the penthouse. She thinks you're crawling back.
Sebastian let out a cold, humorless chuckle, sliding the phone toward Clara. "Ask and you shall receive. Helena thinks we’re beaten. She thinks I’ll bring Clara back on a leash to apologize for breaking her antique table."
"And what will we do?" Clara asked, her jaw set with newfound resolve. The fear that had paralyzed her in the dining room had completely evaporated, replaced by a sharp, collective survival instinct.
"We play our part," Sebastian said, standing up. "We drive back into the city tomorrow morning. We walk through those front doors looking defeated, contrite, and desperate. We let her savor the victory for exactly twenty minutes."
"While Julian breaks into the headquarters safe," Clara completed the thought, her eyes shining with determination.

"Exactly," Sebastian nodded. "Julian has a forgery team ready. The physical ledger will be swapped with a duplicate containing an embedded subpoena from the federal prosecutor’s office, courtesy of an old contact of his in the DOJ. Once Mother opens that safe tomorrow evening, she won't be looking at corporate assets—she’ll be looking at twenty years in federal prison."
The plan was audacious, high-stakes, and terrifyingly fragile. One wrong move, one suspicious security guard, or one miscalculated micro-expression during their meeting with Helena would blow their cover and hand the Sterlings absolute, permanent victory. But as Sebastian looked at his wife—no longer an intimidated pawn, but a fierce, intelligent partner—he knew they had no other choice. They were going to war on the enemy's home turf.
