Chapter 8

As the evening sky deepened into shades of indigo and violet, the penthouse grew quiet. Leo had finally worn himself out from the day's trauma and fallen asleep on one of the guest room beds, curled tightly around a plush throw pillow. The baby was resting peacefully in a portable crib that hotel staff had quietly delivered and assembled within minutes.
Elena sat at the edge of the expansive dining table, nursing a cup of chamomile tea that Julian had insisted she drink. Julian sat opposite her, his laptop open between them, displaying rows of financial spreadsheets, encrypted banking logs, and legal filings. The casual warmth of earlier had shifted back into the sharp, analytical focus of a titan of industry.
“Arthur’s incompetence goes far beyond emotional cruelty,” Julian explained, scrolling down a complex ledger. “For the past three years, he has systematically gutted Vance Logistics’ research and development division, diverting funds into shell companies to finance a lavish lifestyle—and to fund Victoria’s high-end boutique investments.”
Elena stared at the glowing screen, her mind struggling to process the scale of the deceit. “I knew he was stressed about company performance,” she murmured, wrapping her hands around the warm ceramic mug. “He always blamed market fluctuations, supply chain delays. He told me I was spending too much on groceries and the children's clothes. I actually believed I was the burden.”
“That was by design,” Julian said firmly, looking up from the screen to meet her eyes. “Gaslighting is an art form for men like Arthur. He needed you to feel small so you wouldn't look closely at the ledger. But he made one critical error.”
“What error?”
“He used a shared encrypted server linked to a legacy account his father set up a decade ago—an account that my firm holds primary auditing rights over,” Julian explained, tapping the trackpad. “When he filed for a rushed, predatory separation yesterday, he triggered an automated compliance flag. That brought his entire house of cards directly to my desk.”
Elena felt a cold shiver run down her spine, mixed with a strange, burgeoning sense of liberation. “What happens to him now?”
“Legally? Civil suits for corporate fraud, asset seizure, and potentially criminal charges for falsifying corporate disclosures,” Julian said without a trace of hesitation. “He will lose everything he built on stolen capital. By tomorrow morning, his accounts will be frozen, his credit revoked, and his name removed from the corporate registry.”

Elena looked down at the dark liquid in her cup, watching her own reflection ripple slightly. “It feels surreal. Just this morning, I was terrified of how I would buy milk for the baby.”
“You never have to worry about that again,” Julian said softly, reaching across the table. His hand hovered just above hers, warm and steady, offering comfort without demanding anything in return. “Not here. Not ever.”
