Chapter 1

The grand lobby of the Hotel Astor was a masterclass in calculated opulence, its polished marble floors reflecting the warm amber glow of crystal chandeliers. Yet, the air was suffocatingly cold. Arthur Vance stood near the towering golden revolving doors, his navy blue vest straining slightly against his chest as he thrust a rigid finger forward. His dark hair was disheveled over heavy stubble, his face twisted into a mask of righteous fury.
“I’m done, Elena. Get out!” Arthur shouted, his voice echoing sharply against the pristine stonework, startling the luxury hotel’s afternoon patrons.
Elena stood frozen near the center of the vast lobby, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, practical ponytail. She wore a simple green t-shirt and worn denim shorts, looking entirely out of place among the gilded columns and tailored wealth. Cradled tightly in her arms was their five-month-old infant, swaddled in plain beige cloth. Clinging desperately to the hem of Elena's shorts was their five-year-old son, Leo, his brown eyes wide with uncomprehending terror. Elena’s chest heaved with shallow, ragged breaths. Tears welled in her eyes, threatening to spill over, but she refused to let them fall. She looked at the man she had shared ten years of her life with, searching his face for a single trace of the Arthur she once knew. There was only a stranger fueled by cold malice.

Just a few feet away, Victoria stood with her hand resting lightly on Arthur’s arm. She was striking in a vibrant red satin button-up blouse and a sleek black skirt, her blonde hair styled in effortless waves. A subtle, smug smile played at the corners of her lips as she watched Elena’s humiliation. Victoria leaned in close to Arthur, whispering something calculated into his ear, stoking the flames of his anger.
Behind this chaotic tableau, the heavy glass panels of the revolving door began to turn. A tall man emerged from the street, stepping into the lobby with a quiet, commanding presence. He wore an immaculate black suit, but his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a heavy silver chain resting against his sun-bronzed skin. He stopped, his dark eyes instantly locking onto the scene unfolding before him. He did not blink, nor did he flinch at Arthur’s shouting. His gaze held a terrifying intensity, heavy with unspoken history. As Arthur continued his tirade, the tall man took a slow, deliberate step forward, his jaw tightening with deep emotional tension. The air in the room shifted, turning heavy and expectant. With a voice that carried effortless authority across the marble expanse, the tall man spoke two words that cut through the noise: “Let go.”
