Chapter 6

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, her instincts warring between caution and absolute necessity. She looked at Arthur, who was still slumped against the marble pillar, muttering incoherently to himself, utterly broken by his own hubris. Then she looked at her children—Leo’s tired eyes and the peaceful, rhythmic breathing of the baby resting against her chest. She made her choice.

“Thank you, Julian,” Elena said quietly, stepping forward and taking Julian’s outstretched hand to help steady herself as she balanced the infant. Her hand felt small and calloused within his firm, warm grip.

Julian stood up smoothly, shielding them both with his broad frame as he guided them toward the private elevator bank. A discreet hotel manager in a sharp grey suit immediately intercepted them, holding a black access card out with a deferential nod. Julian took the card without breaking stride, swiping it against the sleek metallic panel beside the mahogany doors. The doors slid open silently, revealing a private, wood-paneled interior lined with brushed brass.

As the doors closed, cutting off the view of the chaotic lobby and the ruined man slumped against the pillar, the elevator began its swift, silent ascent. The sensation of movement was barely perceptible, save for the slight pressure in their ears as they climbed high above the city streets. Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders finally dropping from their tight, defensive hunch.

“You’re safe here,” Julian broke the silence, standing near the control panel while maintaining a respectful distance. He didn't look at her with pity, but with a profound, steady acknowledgment of her resilience. “No one will bother you, Elena. Take off your shoes, get the children settled, and rest. We have all the time in the world to figure out the next steps.”

Leo stared up at the digital floor numbers climbing rapidly—40, 41, 42—his earlier fear replaced by childish wonder. “Look, Mom! We’re going up to the sky!”

Elena managed a weak, genuine smile, running her hand through Leo’s short brown hair. “Yes, sweetie. We’re going up.” She looked across the small space at Julian, the questions burning in her mind finally demanding voice. “Why are you doing this, Julian? We went to college together, yes, but that was over a decade ago. We were barely acquaintances. Why step in like this?”

Julian turned his head slowly, his gaze locking onto hers with deep emotional resonance. The elevator chimed softly, and the doors glided open to reveal a sprawling penthouse bathed in golden afternoon sunlight.
