Chapter 5 - The Open Gate

As the heavy iron gates swung open, the coastal wind rushed into the driveway, carrying the salty scent of the ocean and the sharp promise of escape. Emily didn't waste a single second. She grabbed the handle of the old brown leather suitcase, scooped up six-year-old Julian with her free arm, and yelled at the other three boys to run through the opening.
"Get in the car, right now!" the stranger in the leather jacket commanded, holding the rear door of the matte-black SUV wide open.
Leo, Toby, and Marcus scrambled inside the back seat without hesitation, their small bodies tumbling over one another in their rush to get away from the mansion. Emily shoved Julian into the vehicle after them, sliding in herself and pulling the heavy brown suitcase onto her lap like a shield.
Richard sprinted forward, his face mottled with rage, lunging past the stranger to grab the edge of the open door before it could close.
"You have no idea what you're interfering with!" Richard yelled, his voice cracking as he glared at the stranger. "That woman is stealing classified corporate assets! Those boys are my sons, and I will have you all arrested for kidnapping!"
The stranger didn't flinch. He looked Richard dead in the eye, a faint, dangerous smirk playing on his lips. "Corporate assets? Funny, usually assets don't look like they've been starved and beaten. Step away from the vehicle before I show you what a real fight looks like."
Clara finally arrived at the gate, her chest heaving as she gripped the side of the SUV, staring at Emily with sheer venom. "You think you've won, Emily? You’re just a pawn. Once he makes a single phone call, the police will hunt you down across state lines. You won't survive forty-eight hours."
"Drive!" Emily shouted to the front seat.
The stranger slammed the SUV door shut in Richard’s face, jumped into the driver's seat, and punched the accelerator. The tires squealed against the asphalt, leaving a thick cloud of white smoke as the heavy vehicle surged forward onto the coastal highway, putting rapid distance between them and the grand brick mansion.
Inside the back seat, the four boys were panting heavily, their wide eyes reflecting the blur of the passing scenery. Toby began to cry softly, the adrenaline finally wearing off, leaving only the crushing weight of their trauma. Emily pulled the children closer, wrapping her arms around them while keeping a firm, protective grip on the brown leather suitcase.
"You're safe now," Emily whispered, though her own voice shook. "Nobody is going to hurt you anymore."
The stranger glanced at Emily through the rearview mirror, his grey eyes assessing the battered suitcase resting on her lap. "You realize," he said quietly as the SUV sped down the winding cliffside road, "opening that suitcase just painted a massive target on all of our backs."

Emily looked down at the brass latches, knowing the stranger was entirely right. She reached out, unclasped the metal locks, and lifted the lid just an inch, revealing the first few pages of documents that the Vance family had tried so desperately to keep buried.
