Chapter 4 - A Stranger at the Gate

Richard’s fingers dug into the worn leather of the suitcase, applying downward pressure to wrench it from Emily’s grasp. Emily planted her boots firmly against the paved driveway, using all her strength to counter his pull, her muscles straining beneath the navy blue fabric of her maid dress.

"Let go of her!" eight-year-old Leo shouted. Without a moment of hesitation, the boy lunged forward and sank his teeth deeply into the hand Richard had clamped around Emily's shoulder.

Richard let out a sharp cry of pain and shock, releasing his grip on Emily to shove the child away. Leo stumbled backward, crashing hard onto the pavement with a sharp gasp, scraping his elbows raw against the rough stone.

"Leo!" Toby screamed, dropping to his knees beside his brother.

"Don't you ever touch him!" Emily snarled, fueled by a surge of pure protective fury. She swung the heavy suitcase once more, catching Richard squarely across the jaw with a sickening thud.

Richard staggered back, clutching his bleeding lip, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief that a domestic employee had physically assaulted him. Clara finally reached the gates, breathless and clutching her pink gown, her face flushed with humiliation and fury.

"Richard, what is wrong with you? Just tackle her and take the bag!" Clara shrieked, her voice echoing off the brick pillars of the grand mansion behind them.

Before Richard could recover his balance and lunge again, a heavy, deep-throated engine rumbled just on the other side of the wrought-iron security gates. Headlights cut through the morning fog, illuminating the driveway in a stark, blinding glare. A matte-black SUV pulled off the coastal highway and slammed to a halt mere inches from the iron bars.

The driver's side door swung open, and a tall man in a weathered leather jacket stepped out. He wore mirrored aviator sunglasses despite the dim morning light, and his jaw was covered in a heavy, dark stubble. He surveyed the chaotic scene before him with a cold, detached curiosity.

"Looks like a lovely family reunion," the stranger called out, his deep voice carrying effortlessly over the hum of the idling engine. "Especially the part where the adult man is fighting a maid and four bruised children."

Richard straightened his jacket hurriedly, trying to regain his composure despite the blood trickling from his lower lip. "Mind your own business, stranger. This is a private family matter. Drive away, or you'll regret it."

The stranger slowly removed his sunglasses, revealing piercing grey eyes that scanned the bruised faces of the four boys, lingered on the old brown leather suitcase, and finally locked onto Emily.

"Doesn't look very private," the stranger said calmly, walking right up to the electronic keypad. With a swift movement, he flipped open the maintenance panel on the side of the gate post, pulled out a pocketknife, and severed two thick wires with a sharp snip.

The security lock clicked open with a heavy mechanical groan, and the iron gates slowly swung outward.
