Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Paved Driveway

The gravel crunched under Richard’s polished leather shoes as he advanced toward them, his tall frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the four young boys. Emily instinctively shifted her body to shield Julian, Leo, Toby, and Marcus. The boys huddled tightly against her skirt, their identical grey t-shirts damp with sweat and morning dew.

"Emily, you are making a catastrophic mistake," Richard said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. "We pay you generously. Far more than your background warrants. Drop the bag, take the rest of your monthly wages from the side table inside, and walk away quietly. No one needs to get hurt."

"Money doesn't wash blood off stone, Mr. Vance," Emily retorted, keeping her posture rigid despite the panic clawing at her throat.

Clara remained at the top of the stone steps, her arms crossed defensively over her light pink evening gown. The stained hem trailed against the marble porch like a fresh wound. "She’s just looking for a payout, Richard. Call the security company. Report the bag as stolen property. Let them deal with a thief."

"Stolen?" Emily let out a sharp, incredulous breath. "You locked these children in the cellar for forty-eight hours without food because they witnessed your husband burning financial records in the furnace. I have the ledger right here in this suitcase. Along with the medical reports from Julian’s last hospital visit that you bribed the doctor to cover up."

At the mention of the cellar, Toby let out a muffled sob, burying his dirty face into Leo’s shoulder. Leo, the oldest at eight, tightened his jaw, trying desperately to look brave, though a fresh bruise bloomed across his cheekbone.

Richard stopped walking. He was now only ten feet away. His dark eyes flicked down to the brown leather suitcase, assessing its bulk, calculating the damage those papers could inflict on his corporate empire and his social standing. A muscle ticked violently in his jaw.

"You think a few scraps of paper can destroy what I’ve built?" Richard asked, a tight, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You’re an anonymous maid with zero credibility. The police won't even look at your statement."

"Then why are you sweating, Mr. Vance?" Emily asked quietly.

Richard lunged forward with terrifying speed, his hands outstretched to grab the suitcase handle. Emily reacted on pure instinct, swinging the heavy bag backward.
