Chapter 10 - The Empty Water Tower

The SUV crunched to a halt directly beneath the rusted legs of the old water tower. The rain drummed a relentless, rhythmic beat against the vehicle's roof, washing away the mud caked on the windows and offering a clear, unobstructed view of the desolate quarry surroundings.

"Nobody's here," Emily whispered, her voice tight with rising anxiety. She checked the time on the burner phone dashboard clock. "We're five minutes early, but... shouldn't they already be stationed here?"

Agent Miller didn't answer immediately. He scanned the jagged limestone cliffs and the abandoned industrial sheds lining the perimeter of the quarry pit, his hand resting casually near his jacket pocket where the outline of a firearm was clearly visible.

"Stay in the car, lock the doors, and keep your head down," Miller ordered quietly, putting the gear into park.

"Miller, wait, you can't just leave us here alone!" Emily protested, grabbing his sleeve.

"I'm not leaving. I'm checking the perimeter," Miller said, his voice hard and unyielding. "If I'm not back in five minutes, or if you hear two shots, you put this car in drive, punch the gas, and don't stop driving north until you hit the Canadian border."

Before Emily could argue further, Miller pushed his door open and stepped out into the pouring rain, blending seamlessly into the shadows of the rusted water tower supports.

Inside the SUV, the tension was palpable. Julian whimpered, curling up in a ball across the back seat, while Toby clutched Marcus’s hand so hard his knuckles turned white. Emily kept her eyes glued to the rearview mirror, watching the gray expanse of the quarry floor for any sign of movement.

One minute passed. Then two. The rain intensified, turning the gravel road into a slick, muddy trench.

Suddenly, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights cut through the rain from the opposite side of the quarry entrance. A heavy, unmarked black transport van came tearing down the access road, its tires kicking up plumes of water and gravel as it surged directly toward the water tower.

"Miss Emily..." Leo whispered, pointing a trembling finger toward the approaching van. "That's not... that's not a police car."

The transport van slammed on its brakes, skidding sideways across the wet gravel before coming to a violent stop, blocking the SUV's only exit route. The side door of the van slid open with a loud, metallic screech, and three men in tactical gear stepped out into the rain, their faces concealed behind black balaclavas, automatic rifles raised and pointed straight at the SUV's windshield.
