Chapter 12 - The Quarry Shootout

"Drop your weapons!" Agent Miller’s voice echoed across the desolate quarry, sharp and commanding.

The two remaining tactical operatives scrambled for cover behind the open doors of their transport van, returning fire with a burst of automatic weapon fire that chewed into the rusted metal of the water tower supports, sending a shower of orange sparks flying into the rain.

"Get down! Stay on the floor!" Miller shouted toward the SUV, ducking behind a concrete block as bullets whined past him.

Inside the vehicle, Emily shoved the boys down onto the floorboards, covering them entirely with her own body while keeping a death grip on the brown leather suitcase. Glass shattered from the passenger side window as a stray bullet punched clean through the SUV, embedding itself in the dashboard.

Toby screamed, a high-pitched sound of pure terror, while Marcus buried his face in the carpet and sobbed uncontrollably.

Miller fired twice more, his aim clinical and precise, disabling the engine block of the transport van with a deafening screech of punctured metal and spewing radiator fluid. The van ground to a definitive halt, steam hissing into the cold rain.

"We're compromised! Fall back! Fall back!" one of the operatives yelled into his radio, grabbing his wounded comrade by the vest and dragging him into the passenger seat of the disabled van.

Within seconds, the remaining operatives slammed the doors shut, abandoning their position and desperately trying to restart the smoking engine, which sputtered and died completely. Realizing they were stranded, they burst out of the doors on the opposite side and bolted on foot toward the steep, rugged trails leading up into the limestone hills, disappearing into the dense fog.

The quarry fell back into an eerie, heavy silence, broken only by the steady patter of the rain and the ragged breathing of the children inside the SUV.

Miller slowly lowered his weapon, checked his magazine, and walked briskly back across the gravel toward the driver's side door of the vehicle. He pulled the door open, his face tight with adrenaline and urgency.

"You guys okay in here?" Miller asked, his eyes scanning Emily and the boys for injuries.

"We're alive," Emily gasped, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she lifted herself off the floorboards. "You... you just shot at a private security contractor. They're tied to the highest levels of government and corporate intelligence. We can't run from them forever, Miller."

Miller reached inside, helping Emily up and taking the old brown leather suitcase from her trembling grip to inspect it for damage. "I never planned on running forever, Emily. We just needed to smoke them out and find out who was really pulling Richard Vance's strings."

He popped the brass latches of the suitcase open once more, pulled out a stack of documents from the bottom of the pile that they hadn't looked at yet, and held up a heavily stamped, classified federal dossier bearing a red ink seal that made his expression instantly darken.
