Chapter 1 - The Broken Promise

The heavy oak doors of the grand brick mansion banged against the stone pillars, echoing across the paved driveway like a gunshot. Emily did not look back, though the weight of the old brown leather suitcase tore at her shoulder muscles. Her yellow rubber cleaning gloves squeaked against the handle as she hurried forward, her dark hair pinned tightly in a practical bun that was beginning to unravel in the damp morning air. Behind her, the sharp, desperate cries of the children pierced the quiet estate.

"Miss Emily, wait!" screamed Julian, his voice cracking with a raw terror that no six-year-old should ever possess.

Julian, along with his three brothers—Leo, Toby, and Marcus—scrambled down the grand front steps. Their faces were smudged with dirt, and fresh scrapes marred their knees, silent testaments to the chaos unfolding inside the house.

Emily kept walking, her navy blue maid dress rustling sharply. She swallowed hard, tasting the metallic fear in her mouth. She had promised herself she would not get entangled in the family’s dark machinery again.

"Stop right there, Emily!" a cold, sharp voice sliced through the crisp air.

Emily froze, her boots halting on the gravel. She slowly turned around to face Richard, her employer of three years, who stood at the top of the stairs. His navy blue suit jacket was half-buttoned over his crisp white shirt, the collar undone in a way that screamed uncontrolled rage. Beside him stood Clara, her light pink off-the-shoulder evening gown stained with dried red wine at the hem, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed despite the early hour.

"You have no right to leave with that, Emily," Richard barked, taking two rapid steps down the stone stairs before checking himself, maintaining that chilling, aristocratic composure. "Put the bag down. It doesn't belong to you."

"Everything inside this suitcase belongs to the truth, Mr. Vance," Emily replied, her voice trembling only slightly. "And the authorities are going to want every single document."

Clara laughed, a chilling, brittle sound that lacked any warmth. "The authorities? You think anyone is going to believe a low-level maid over a respected family? You’re ruining your own life for four brats who aren't even yours."

Julian reached Emily’s side, grabbing the fabric of her navy dress with bruised, trembling fingers. He looked up at her with tear-filled eyes.

"Don't leave us with them, Emily," Julian whispered, his small frame shaking. "You saw what he did in the basement."

Richard’s eyes narrowed into dark slits as he took another step down the driveway, his gaze fixed entirely on the old brown leather suitcase in Emily's gloved hand.
