Chapter 9 - The Confession Beneath the Floorboards

The guards hauled Eleanor upright, dragging her unceremoniously toward the heavy front doors while her muffled curses echoed off the stone walls of the foyer. Arthur remained kneeling on the ruined floor, holding little Clara tightly against his chest as the child's breathing finally slowed into quiet, exhausted sniffles. Catherine stood slowly, her fur-lined cloak sweeping the floor as she looked down at the man who had once ruled her world with an iron fist and a ledger of corporate debts.

“What do you mean, I don't know why?” Arthur asked, his voice cracking as he looked up at her from the floor. He gently set Clara down on a clear patch of the Persian rug, wrapping his coat around her shivering shoulders before standing up to face his returned wife. “I gave you everything. Wealth, status, protection—”

“A cage,” Catherine interrupted, her voice dropping into a dangerous, rhythmic cadence. “You call it protection, Arthur. But you and your business partners were using this estate as a front for something far darker than mere corporate embezzlement. Why do you think Eleanor fought so viciously to keep control of these accounts? Because the money feeding this family doesn't come from stocks or real estate.”

Arthur frowned, stepping closer to her. The harsh glare of the chandelier caught the lines of confusion etched deep into his bald head. “What are you talking about? My businesses are entirely legitimate.”

“Are they?” Catherine challenged, reaching into the deep pocket of her cloak and pulling out a heavy, leather-bound ledger bound with a rusted brass lock. She tossed it onto the mahogany dining table, right beside the shattered remains of the crystal pitcher. “I spent the last five years auditing the offshore accounts you thought only you and Eleanor had access to. You were so busy playing the tyrant of the northern estate that you never noticed Eleanor was systematically siphoning your illegal kickbacks into a private trust—a trust registered under my maiden name.”

Arthur stared at the ledger as if it were a venomous snake. He took a hesitant step toward the table, his fingers brushing the cold brass lock. “That’s impossible. I signed every transaction myself.”

“Because Eleanor forged your digital signature while you slept,” Catherine stated coldly. “She manipulated both of us, Arthur. She convinced you I was plotting against you, and she convinced me you were planning to have me institutionalized. She orchestrated the entire rift so she could step into my shoes, inherit the estate, and control the syndicate from the shadows.”

Arthur backed away from the table, shaking his head in absolute denial. “No... no, that can't be true. I trusted her with everything after you died.”

“And that,” Catherine whispered, stepping directly into his personal space, her eyes flashing with a chilling intensity, “is why she left one final trap for you—hidden right beneath the floorboards of the master study.”

Arthur froze, his breath catching in his throat. “What’s in the study?”

May you like

Catherine smiled slowly, a dark, humorless expression. “The real reason your first wife actually jumped off the northern cliffs—and it wasn't because of me.”
