Chapter 7 - The Pearl-Handled Barrel

The metallic click of the revolver’s hammer cocking back echoed sharply through the cavernous foyer, freezing everyone in motion. The security guards lowered their weapons slightly, realizing the deadly proximity of the threat to both Catherine and little Clara, who was still huddled near the dining room entrance. Arthur let out a choked cry of pure terror, his hand shooting out instinctively toward Eleanor.

“Put the gun down, Eleanor!” Arthur roared, his voice shaking with a desperation that shattered his usual authoritative demeanor. “This is between you and us! Leave the child out of it!”

Eleanor’s hand trembled slightly, not from fear, but from the intoxicating rush of absolute power. Her blonde hair fell loosely across her flushed cheek, and her sparkly evening gown caught the harsh glare of the chandelier, making her look like a deranged queen holding court in a ruined kingdom.

“You thought you could outsmart me, Arthur?” Eleanor sneered, her blue eyes wide and unhinged. “You thought you could secretly fly Catherine back into the country behind my back while keeping me locked in this gilded cage? I built this entire conspiracy with her. Every offshore account, every forged death certificate, every penny of the estate’s liquidity—it flows through my accounts. If I go down, I am taking every single one of you with me into the abyss.”

Catherine stood her ground, her expression remarkably calm despite the barrel of the gun pointing directly at her heart. She took one slow, deliberate step forward, ignoring Arthur’s frantic warning hiss.

“You built nothing, Eleanor,” Catherine said, her voice steady and laced with a quiet, devastating authority. “You were a parasite living off the scraps of my family’s fortune while I was forced into hiding to protect my daughter from Arthur’s corporate monsters. But you grew greedy. You thought you could usurp my place at the estate, torture my child with ice water, and inherit an empire built on blood and deceit.”

Eleanor’s finger tightened on the trigger, her face contorting into a mask of pure hatred. “Shut up! Just shut up!”

“Mommy!” Clara screamed from the shadows, her small voice piercing the heavy air like a glass-shattering shriek. The little girl broke away from the doorway, ignoring the danger as she sprinted across the ruined dining room floor toward Catherine.

“Clara, no! Get back!” Arthur yelled, lunging forward to intercept his daughter.

Before Arthur could reach her, Eleanor abruptly shifted the aim of the revolver away from Catherine, swinging the barrel downward toward the sprinting child with a sick, calculated smile.

“Let’s see how much your precious empire is worth when the heir is gone,” Eleanor hissed, her finger beginning to squeeze the trigger.

Catherine’s eyes widened in horror, and with a speed that defied her years, she lunged forward, tackling the heavy crystal pitcher off the nearby table and hurling it directly at Eleanor’s head.
