Chapter 10 - The Master Study Secret

The heavy oak door of the master study creaked open, releasing a stale cloud of dust and the sharp, metallic scent of aged parchment and old iron. Arthur strode in first, holding a heavy brass candelabra that cast long, dancing shadows across the mahogany bookshelves and the towering leather-bound volumes that lined the walls. Catherine followed closely behind him, her boots clicking rhythmically against the Persian carpet. Little Clara had been left in the care of the remaining loyal household staff in the warm nursery upstairs, safe from the dark revelations waiting in the room.
Arthur stopped beside the large mahogany executive desk, his hand trembling slightly as he set the candelabra down.
“Where in the study?” Arthur demanded, his voice echoing hollowly in the quiet room.
Catherine walked past him toward the heavy velvet curtains draped over the northern-facing window, which overlooked the dark, churning expanse of the ocean far below. She knelt down beside the baseboard near the heavy radiator, running her gloved fingers along the intricately carved wooden molding until her nail caught a hidden seam.
“Right here,” Catherine said, applying pressure to a small brass latch concealed within the floral carvings.
With a soft, pneumatic hiss, a section of the oak floorboard popped upward, revealing a shallow, velvet-lined compartment carved directly into the foundation of the estate. Inside rested a single, heavy cassette tape and a stack of faded, handwritten letters tied together with a black silk ribbon.
Arthur dropped to his knees beside her, his breath hitching as he stared into the hidden compartment. He reached out with trembling fingers and picked up the top letter, recognizing the sharp, elegant handwriting instantly.
“My father’s letters,” Arthur whispered, his voice thick with disbelief. “He told me these were destroyed in the fire thirty years ago.”
“They weren't destroyed,” Catherine replied quietly, watching his face closely. “They were hidden by Eleanor’s father—your father’s former business partner—to blackmail your family into submission. Read the one on top, Arthur. The date matches the exact night your father mysteriously died in his study.”
Arthur unfolded the fragile, yellowed paper, his eyes scanning the dense ink lines in the flickering candlelight. As he read, the color drained completely from his face, and his hands began to shake so violently that the paper fluttered against the rug.
‘If Arthur ever discovers the truth about the northern shipping routes,’ the letter read in his father’s hurried, panicked script, ‘he will realize that our entire fortune was built on human trafficking and stolen inheritances. Eleanor’s family holds the ledger. If I die under suspicious circumstances, they will destroy him.’
Arthur dropped the letter as if it had burned his skin. He stared blankly ahead, the pillars of his entire life crumbling around him in a single, devastating second.
“My father didn't die of a heart attack,” Arthur rasped, the horrifying realization finally dawning on him. “They murdered him.”
Catherine placed a steady hand on his shaking shoulder, her voice dropping into a harsh, uncompromising whisper.

“And Eleanor was planning to do the exact same thing to you tonight, Arthur—using your own daughter as the ultimate leverage.”
