Chapter 14 - Shadows on the Horizon

The flashing red and blue emergency lights continued to sweep through the tall windows of the master study, casting an erratic, restless glow across the restored mahogany furniture and the open floorboard compartment. Arthur held little Clara securely in his arms as Catherine gently locked the heavy brass latch over the hidden compartment, sealing away the last physical piece of the estate’s dark history. The police had taken Marcus, Eleanor, and the remaining conspirators into federal custody, effectively dismantling the domestic branch of the syndicate that had plagued the family for decades.
Yet, as Catherine stood up and looked out the north-facing window into the blinding blizzard, the heavy knot in her stomach refused to dissolve.
“The local authorities have secured the perimeter,” Arthur said softly, walking over to stand beside her and wrapping a protective arm around her waist. He looked down at Clara, who had fallen fast asleep against his shoulder, her breathing calm and even for the first time in years. “We’re safe here, Catherine. The nightmare is finally finished.”
Catherine shook her head slowly, her piercing eyes fixed on the distant iron gates at the end of the long, snow-covered driveway, where a single black sedan sat idling in the shadows, its headlights turned off.
“The local branch is finished, Arthur,” Catherine corrected, her voice dropping into a tense, urgent whisper. “But the syndicate in Geneva doesn't operate through local police or domestic courts. They operate in the shadows of international finance and political immunity. The moment they realize Marcus and Eleanor failed to recover the master tape, they won't send thugs with pistols. They’ll send professionals.”
Arthur frowned, tightening his grip around her waist. “We have the federal protection detail stationed outside. No one can touch us here.”
Before Catherine could reply, a sharp, metallic crack echoed from the distant courtyard, followed instantly by the heavy dining room window shattering into a million sparkling shards of glass downstairs.
Arthur froze, his instincts instantly flaring into high alert. He gently transferred sleeping Clara into Catherine’s trembling arms, his stern face hardening into a mask of lethal defiance.
“Take Clara down through the hidden drainage tunnel behind the wine cellar,” Arthur commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. “Get to the boat anchored at the cove.”
Catherine gripped the lapels of his suit jacket, her eyes wide with terror. “I’m not leaving you behind again, Arthur!”
May you like
“You have to,” Arthur insisted, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss to her forehead before turning toward the study door and drawing a heavy service revolver from the hidden wall safe. “Because the person stepping through that broken window right now isn't here for the estate, Catherine... they’re here for me.”
