Chapter 12 - The Masked Intruder

The cold, metallic barrel of the silenced pistol glistened under the dim emergency lights as the masked intruder stepped fully into the master study. Arthur instinctively shoved Catherine behind him, his broad frame shielding her from the line of fire while his hand frantically searched the executive desk for a heavy object to use as a weapon. The air in the room grew suffocatingly thin, every heartbeat pounding loudly in their ears.
“You’re too late,” Catherine said, her voice remaining eerily calm as she slowly stepped out from behind Arthur’s shoulder, holding the cassette tape up in her gloved hand. “The federal authorities already have copies of the ledger uploaded to an off-site server. If you pull that trigger, the entire syndicate goes public within sixty seconds.”
The masked man hesitated for a fraction of a second, his synthetic voice letting out a low, dangerous growl. “You’re bluffing. Eleanor assured me the estate communications were completely jammed.”
“Eleanor is tied up in the foyer waiting for a police transport,” Arthur interjected, stepping forward with a fierce, controlled rage that made the intruder tense his trigger finger. “You lost. Whatever blood money your bosses promised you, it isn't worth spending the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison.”
The intruder let out a harsh, artificial laugh. “You think Eleanor was the mastermind? She was just a puppet playing a high-society game. The real syndicate doesn't care about money, Arthur. They care about control. And this estate sits directly on the only deep-water smuggling trench along the northern border.”
Before the masked man could adjust his aim toward Catherine, a sudden, sharp commotion erupted from the hallway behind him. Heavy footsteps thundered against the parquet flooring, followed by the sound of a struggle and a heavy body crashing against the antique wainscoting.
The lead security guard, bleeding slightly from a graze on his forehead, lunged through the doorway and tackled the masked intruder violently to the floor, sending the pistol skittering across the Persian rug. Arthur didn't hesitate; he lunged forward, pinning the intruder’s arm to the ground while Catherine swiftly kicked the weapon away into the shadows beneath the heavy mahogany desk.
“Hold him!” Arthur roared, pressing his knee firmly into the man’s chest as the security guard secured industrial zip-ties around the intruder’s wrists.
Catherine reached down and grabbed the edge of the ceramic mask, ripping it away with a sharp, decisive jerk to reveal the face of Arthur’s most trusted corporate vice president, biting his lip in bitter defeat.
Arthur stared down at the man in utter disbelief. “Marcus... you were funding the whole operation?”
May you like
Marcus spat a drop of blood onto the carpet, smiling a bloodstained, triumphant smile. “You were too blind to see it, Arthur. The empire was rotting from the inside out long before you ever married Eleanor.”
