Chapter 8 - The Shattered Crystal

The heavy crystal pitcher caught Eleanor squarely on the shoulder, throwing her aim violently off to the side just as the revolver discharged with a deafening roar. The bullet embedded itself deep into the ancient oak flooring inches from Clara’s tiny shoes, sending up a shower of splinters. Clara shrieked, stumbling backward and falling hard against the scattered shards of broken dinner plates.

Before Eleanor could recover her balance and level the gun again, Arthur was already there. With a roar of primal fury, he slammed his full weight into Eleanor, driving her backward against the ornate wooden banister of the staircase. The revolver flew from her hand, clattering loudly across the marble floor before sliding into the dark recesses beneath the grand piano.

The security guards moved with synchronized precision, swarming the staircase and pinning Eleanor firmly against the railing. Her expensive evening gown tore along the seam, and her diamond necklace snapped, scattering precious stones across the steps like frozen tears.

“Get off me! You don't know what you've done!” Eleanor screamed, thrashing wildly against the guards as they secured her wrists with heavy industrial zip-ties. Her hair was completely disheveled, her makeup smeared across her face in jagged streaks of black and red.

Arthur ignored her frantic shrieks, turning around in a blind panic to search for his daughter. He dropped to his knees on the ruined floor, his hands hovering frantically over Clara, who was sobbing softly while clutching her bleeding knee.

“Clara! Clara, look at me. Are you alright?” Arthur pleaded, his stern face entirely melted away by overwhelming relief and terror as he pulled the little girl into his arms, carefully avoiding the sharp glass shards surrounding them.

Clara buried her face in the dark fabric of Arthur’s suit, her small shoulders shaking as she gripped his lapels. “It hurts, daddy... everything hurts.”

Catherine hurried over, dropping to her knees beside them. Her hands, delicate and trembling, gently brushed the messy, wet hair away from Clara’s tear-stained face. She reached down and carefully unclasped the heavy, pearl-stitched collar of the ruined gold dress, tossing the oppressive garment aside.

“You’re safe now, my sweet girl,” Catherine whispered, pressing a tender kiss to Clara’s forehead while tears finally spilled over her own cheeks. “Mommy is right here. No one will ever hurt you again.”

Arthur looked up from the child, his eyes locking onto Catherine’s across the wreckage of the dining room. The five years of agonizing silence, the bitter deception, and the chilling coldness of the estate seemed to converge in that single, agonizing glance.

“You left me to rot in this hell,” Arthur said softly, his voice thick with unhedged sorrow.

Catherine met his gaze, her expression hardening just enough to remind him of the monster he had once forced her to become.

“I didn't leave you, Arthur,” Catherine whispered darkly, leaning in close. “I escaped you. And the worst part is—you still don't know why.”
