Chapter 9

The sharp buzzing of Elena’s phone sitting on the kitchen counter broke the morning quiet. Elena glanced at the screen, watching Thomas’s name flash repeatedly alongside his photo. She didn't feel anger, nor did she feel the old pang of anxiety that used to grip her chest whenever he called unexpectedly. She felt a profound, crystal-clear detachment. Julian, who was pouring a second cup of coffee across the island, noticed her expression and paused, his hand hovering over the pot. "Do you want me to answer that?" he asked quietly.
Elena shook her head slowly, reaching out to pick up the phone. Instead of declining the call, she hit speaker, placing it gently on the marble surface between them. The line crackled for a moment before Thomas’s desperate, frantic voice filled the quiet kitchen. "Elena! Thank God. Please, you have to listen to me. Victoria is gone, the board locked me out of the company, everything is falling apart. You’re the only one who knows me, the only one who can understand. Please, we can fix this. Just come back home. Let’s talk."
The sheer desperation in his tone was pathetic, a far cry from the arrogant, polished executive who had condescended to her in public for years. Elena listened to the pleading in his voice, realizing with sudden clarity how much energy she had wasted trying to appease a man who viewed her merely as an accessory to his ambition. She took a slow, even breath before speaking into the open air of the kitchen. Her voice was calm, steady, and utterly devoid of emotion.
"There is nothing left to fix, Thomas," Elena said, her words dropping into the receiver with icy precision. "For ten years, I lived in a cage you built out of lies and misplaced guilt. You watched me break my heart and my body trying to give you a family, all while hiding the truth that the impediment was yours. You didn't just deceive me; you stole a decade of my life." Thomas stammered on the other end, his voice cracking with panic. "Elena, I was scared! If people knew, my career would have been—"
May you like
"Your career was built on sand, Thomas, and it deserved to collapse," Elena interrupted firmly. "My lawyer will be filing the divorce papers this afternoon. Don't bother contesting them, because Julian’s team has every financial record, every fabricated document, and every shell company you used documented down to the last cent. If you fight, it won't just be a messy divorce; it will be a federal investigation." A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the line, broken only by the sound of Thomas’s ragged, uneven breathing.
"Elena, please..." Thomas whispered, his voice finally breaking completely. "Don't do this to me. I have nothing left." Elena looked up, catching Julian’s steady, supportive gaze across the counter. She felt an overwhelming surge of strength and closure. "You have exactly what you built, Thomas. Goodbye." Without waiting for another word, she reached out and pressed the end call button, plunging the kitchen back into peaceful silence. She slid the phone across the counter, the final chapter of her past officially closed.
