Chapter 2

The murmurs among the banquet guests grew louder, shifting from polite whispers to sharp, speculative commentary. Thomas realized he was losing control of the narrative, a terrifying prospect for a man whose entire social standing relied on an image of absolute perfection. Victoria reached out, her fingers lightly brushing Thomas’s sleeve in a silent plea for composure, but he violently shook her hand off. The sudden motion caused a collective intake of breath from the nearby tables, exposing the raw friction simmering beneath the surface of Thomas and Victoria’s seemingly idyllic romance.

Elena slowly turned her head away from Thomas, unable to look at the man she had loved and defended for years. Her fingers gripped the edge of the tablecloth, her knuckles turning bone-white. The lace of her dress snagged on the rough grain of the wood, but she didn't feel it. Her mind raced backward through the years, cataloging every argument, every comforting platitude Thomas had offered whenever another negative pregnancy test broke her heart. He had held her while she cried, whispering that it would happen when the time was right, all while knowing that his own body held the secret impediment. It was a cruel, calculated deception designed to preserve his pride at the absolute expense of her sanity.

Julian maintained his grounding presence, his fingers continuing their steady, calming pressure on Elena’s shoulder. He spoke quietly, ensuring only Elena and the immediate group could hear his next words. "You don't have to stay here and endure this circus, Elena. My car is waiting outside. You can take all the time you need to process this away from these vultures." Elena swallowed hard, the lump in her throat making it difficult to breathe, yet a spark of fierce resolve began to replace the raw devastation in her chest. She refused to run away like a frightened child. If anyone was going to leave this room in disgrace, it certainly wouldn't be her.

Victoria decided it was time to intervene, stepping around the table with calculated grace, though the forced smile had finally vanished from her lips. "Julian, this is a private family matter," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a smooth, patronizing register. "You have no business interfering in Thomas and Elena’s marriage with questionable documents. Everyone knows you’ve harbored an obsession with Elena for years. Who’s to say you didn't forge this entire thing just to tear them apart?" The accusation hung in the air, a desperate attempt to flip the script and paint Julian as the villain of the evening.

Julian didn't blink. He turned his head slightly to lock eyes with Victoria, a dangerous glint in his expression. "Careful, Victoria," Julian warned, his voice dangerously low. "When you start accusing people of forgery, you invite a deeper look into your own financial records. And trust me, you don't want anyone looking into how your pregnancy was announced right after Thomas secured those offshore accounts." Victoria recoiled slightly, her eyes widening in sudden panic as she realized Julian knew far more than just the details of a medical report. The house of cards was collapsing, and everyone inside was standing on unstable ground.
