Chapter 3

Thomas stepped between Victoria and Julian, desperate to halt the conversation before any more secrets were dragged into the glaring light of the banquet hall. "Enough!" Thomas barked, his voice cracking slightly before he regained a semblance of authority. He turned his attention back to his wife, his expression softening into a pathetic mask of wounded affection. "Elena, please. Come home with me. We can talk about this in private. We’ve built a life together, ten years of history. You can't throw all of that away over a piece of paper brought by a man who has clearly poisoned your mind."
Elena slowly rose from her seat. The movement was deliberate, unhurried, commanding the attention of the entire room. As she stood beside Julian, the contrast between the two men could not have been starker. Thomas looked desperate, sweating through his expensive silk tie, while Julian stood tall, collected, and utterly unshakeable. Elena looked down at the fertility report resting on the table, then raised her tear-free eyes to meet Thomas’s panicked gaze. The crying had stopped, replaced by a cold, numbing clarity that terrified Thomas far more than her tears ever could.
"Ten years," Elena repeated, her voice steady, carrying a chilling quietness that silenced the surrounding tables completely. "Ten years of apologizing to your mother for my barren womb, Thomas. Ten years of fertility clinics, painful procedures, hormonal injections that made me feel like I was losing my mind, and nights spent weeping into my pillow because I thought my body was fundamentally broken." She stepped closer to him, forcing Thomas to take an involuntary step backward. "You let me carry that cross alone. You watched me self-destruct, and you kept this paper locked in a safe just so you could look like the long-suffering husband of a flawed wife."

Victoria opened her mouth to interject, but Elena’s sharp glance cut her off instantly. "And you, Victoria," Elena continued, turning her gaze toward the woman in the pink dress. "You smug little spectator. How long have you known about this? Is that your baby, or just another convenient acquisition to secure Thomas’s inheritance?" Victoria’s face flushed bright red, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as she struggled to form a coherent denial. The crowd around them erupted into immediate chatter; the polite facade of high society had officially shattered beyond repair.
Julian stepped back, giving Elena the space she needed to reclaim her dignity. He watched her with a mixture of profound respect and sorrow, knowing the immense courage it took to stand tall amid the wreckage of a shattered life. Thomas reached out a trembling hand, attempting to touch Elena’s arm, but she flinched away as if his skin were burning hot. There was no going back to the way things were. The illusion was gone, leaving only the jagged edges of reality exposed for everyone to see.
