Chapter 4

The heavy oak doors at the far end of the banquet hall groaned open, cutting through the rising tide of murmurs. Security personnel, summoned by the venue manager, hovered nervously near the entrance, unsure whether to intervene in a high-society scandal or wait for instructions. Thomas glanced frantically toward the doors, realizing that his reputation—built on decades of corporate dominance and pristine social appearances—was evaporating in real-time. He looked back at Elena, desperation finally giving way to a bitter, ugly resentment.

"You think you’re so innocent, Elena?" Thomas sneered, his voice rising in pitch as he lost his final shred of composure. "You think you were just a victim in all of this? You spent years traveling, ignoring my needs, pouring your energy into a boutique that barely turned a profit while I funded your little hobbies! I deserved a family. If nature wouldn't provide it, I found a way. You forced my hand by being so damn useless!" The ugly confession hung in the air, stripping away any remaining sympathy the onlookers might have felt for him. Gasps echoed through the room at his brazen cruelty.

Julian moved instantly, stepping directly into Thomas’s personal space with a menacing authority that caused Thomas to stumble backward against the table, rattling the crystal glasses. "Another word, Thomas, and I will personally dismantle every corporate asset you own before the sun rises," Julian whispered, his voice a low, terrifying growl meant only for Thomas’s ears. The sheer menace in Julian’s posture made Thomas swallow hard, shutting his mouth immediately. Julian’s protection of Elena was absolute, forged in a history that stretched back further than anyone in this room realized.

Elena looked at Thomas with profound pity, a look that cut deeper than any insult he could have hurled. "I was never useless, Thomas. I just gave you my loyalty, and you mistook it for weakness." She reached down and picked up the fertility report, folding it neatly and sliding it into the small clutch bag hanging from her wrist. She turned to Julian, offering a faint, grateful nod. "Let's go, Julian. I've seen enough of this theater." Julian offered his arm, and without another backward glance, Elena began walking toward the grand exit, parting the sea of gaping guests.

Victoria watched them leave, a look of sheer panic washing over her face as she realized Thomas was now utterly ruined. Without Elena to blame and without his pristine reputation to shield him, Thomas’s financial empire—heavily reliant on public trust and high-society partnerships—would crumble overnight. Victoria grabbed Thomas’s arm, her voice frantic. "What do we do now? They're going to destroy us!" Thomas pulled his arm away roughly, his eyes glazed with shock as he stared at the empty space where Elena had just stood.

Outside the grand hall, the cool night air hit Elena’s face like a splash of cold water. The heavy doors closed behind them, muffling the chaotic noise of the reception into a distant hum. Julian walked her toward his sleek black sedan parked at the curb, opening the door for her with quiet reverence. As Elena slid into the leather seat, the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system, leaving her trembling in the quiet sanctuary of the car. Julian closed the door softly, walked around to the driver's side, and got in, ready to help her rebuild everything from the ashes.
