Chapter 7

Morning sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Julian’s penthouse, painting long golden stripes across the polished hardwood floors. Elena woke up on the plush guest suite bed, wrapped in a heavy silk robe she had found in the closet. For the first time in a decade, she woke up without an oppressive weight pressing against her chest. There were no appointments to dread, no lies to maintain, and no guilt to carry. She walked out into the open-plan kitchen, where the rich aroma of freshly brewed artisanal coffee filled the air.

Julian stood by the island counter, dressed casually in a charcoal cashmere sweater and dark denim, reading a digital tablet. He looked up as Elena approached, offering a warm, reassuring smile that made her heart skip a beat in a way it hadn't in years. "Morning, Elena. Sleep well?" he asked softly, sliding a steaming ceramic mug of coffee toward her. Elena wrapped her hands around the warm mug, letting the heat seep into her skin. "Better than I have in ten years," she replied honestly, taking a slow sip. "It feels quiet. Almost too quiet."

"It's just the sound of reality catching up," Julian said, setting his tablet down. He tapped the screen, sliding it across the counter toward her. "Take a look at the financial news this morning." Elena glanced down at the display. Major headlines blared across the screen: Tech and Real Estate Mogul Thomas Vance Faces Emergency Board Audit Amid Massive Fraud Allegations. Below the headline, articles detailed the sudden freezing of his corporate assets and rumors of fabricated medical documents tied to his high-society standing.

Elena scrolled through the articles, a complex mix of emotions washing over her. There was no joy in seeing Thomas fall, only a profound sense of closure. He had built his entire life on sand, and the tide had finally swept it all away. "He brought it all on himself," Elena murmured, handing the tablet back to Julian. "I spent so long trying to fix a marriage that was built entirely on a foundation of deceit, believing I was the flawed one. It’s terrifying how easily someone can rewrite your reality if you trust them blindly."

Julian stepped closer, leaning against the counter opposite her. "Trust isn't the problem, Elena. Misplaced loyalty is. You gave him your best years, and he took them for granted because he was too cowardly to face his own shortcomings." He paused, his dark eyes searching her face with genuine care. "What do you want to do now? Your boutique, your life, your independence—it’s all yours to reclaim. You don't owe anyone a single explanation." Elena looked into his eyes, feeling a profound sense of freedom she had never experienced before.

"I want to rebuild my boutique," Elena said, her voice growing stronger with every word. "I want to take back the life I put on hold for a man who didn't deserve a fraction of my devotion. But first... I need to settle things legally. I want a divorce, clean and absolute, before the week is over." Julian nodded approvingly, a subtle smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Consider it handled. I have the best legal team in the city ready whenever you give the word. You won't have to face him ever again."
